Job Summary
** The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.
Note: This posting will be used to fill 2 vacancies.
Job Duties: Examples of work for this specific vacancy include but are not limited to:
  • Performs and maintains necessary repairs and installations in the area of steel fabrication and erection of bridges and structures.
  • Performs concrete work for the construction/ repair of bridges and structures.
  • Performs carpentry duties related to bridges, buildings and structures.
  • Cleans and prepares bridges, buildings, and structure surfaces for painting.
  • Assists with or leads safety inspections on bridges and structures.
  • Transfers and operates the full range of heavy equipment used by MnDOT.
  • Determines proper traffic control layout in accordance with the Traffic Control Field Manual.
  • Determines equipment, tools, materials and supplies needed to complete assignment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Snow and Ice
  • Maintains roadways for snow and ice control
  • Prepares and inspects winter equipment
  • Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup
  • Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals
  • Performs all work related to installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing snow fences, replacing mailboxes
  • Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management
  • Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles

Schedule Information
Summer Hours : Four 10-hour days. Monday-Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Winter Hours : Five 8-hour days. Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Valid Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction. Must obtain Class A within 6 months of hire.

The level of experience to perform this job at the TGS level can be achieved with:
  • Two years of experience performing carpentry OR concrete OR iron work OR a combination of one or more of these activities.
    • Examples of carpentry may include: building construction; building repairs; or framing.
    • Examples of concrete work may include: grading; bridge construction, repair and maintenance; or forming, placing and finishing concrete.
    • Examples of iron work may include: structural steel erection; setting anchor bolts and inserts; gusset plate installation; placement of reinforcing steel or rebar; or rebar replacement.

Note: A Two year technical trades training or degree (e.g., carpentry, concrete /masonry, etc.) or equivalent may be substituted for one year of experience. ( In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience, you must submit a copy of your transcript. )
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Physical Requirements
The physical demands of this job will vary, but the snow and ice portion of this position typically requires lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job may also require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job will require strenuous manual labor including, but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing.
