Biological Data Scientist Job DescriptionTalus Bio is looking for a Data Scientist to join our team full-time in our Seattle office..
This person will work directly with Will Fondrie tackling computational biology and chemistry problems at Talus Bio, and will be naturally curious, results-driven, and eager to work in a small biotech start-up environment.
The Data Scientist will work as part of a small team to develop and improve our computational tools for discovering drugs that target transcription factors and other gene regulatory proteins. This position is filled by a technological / scientific leader who leverages their knowledge of machine learning, statistics and proteome/genome bioinformatics to solve complex biological problems in a fast-paced, innovative, early-stage biotech environment.
We value open-source contributions; a successful applicant for this position will include their GitHub (or similar) username.
Salary and BenefitsSalary range: $80,000 - $140,000/year

- Conduct independent research and demonstrate scientific leadership within the project team and across departments
- Collaborate with all functions within and outside Talus Bio to advance our science
Required
- PhD with 0-3 years of industry experience in Biological Data science, or BS/MS degree with 5-7 years of industry experience in Biological Data science; degree should be in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or a related field
- Experience analyzing 'omics data (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, etc.)
- Experience developing and deploying machine learning models
- Experience presenting complex computational results to non-computational stakeholders
- Fluent in Git, Bash, and Python
- Moderate fluency in SQL and the PyData software stack (Pandas, NumPy, etc.)
- Able to programmatically generate clear visualizations of results with tools such as Matplotlib and Seaborn
- A working understanding of proteins and chromatin biology
Preferred
Although we don't expect applicants to have all of these qualifications, they are skills that we value and will weigh in our consideration:
- 2+ years of experience developing deep learning models, preferably with PyTorch
- 2+ years of experience with probabilistic programming, preferably with Pyro
- 2+ years of experience with Python package development
- Significant contributions to open-source scientific software
- Moderate fluency in Rust for high-performance applications
- Moderate fluency in web development such as with React, NextJS, Django, FastaAPI, etc
- Experience developing bioinformatics pipelines using NextFlow, or other workflow engines
- Experience with CI/CD using GitHub Actions or similar
- Experience with Amazon Web Services and managing infrastructure-as-code, preferably with Terraform
