Position Summary 

The Assistant Educator provides children with a positive and appropriate educational environment. The Assistant Educator provides assistance to the Education team by working in the classroom with a wide age-range of children who are in the program for a short period of time, completing assigned paperwork, and is prepared to substitute teach periodically. The Assistant Educator regularly communicates with the cross-functional team and strives to meet continuous quality improvement measures. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Provide children with a positive and appropriate educational environment consistent with the National Youth Advocate Program’s mission, values, and philosophies.  

  • Work with individual children in the classroom to promote their learning and development and collaborate with teachers to monitor the development of each child.  

  • Responsible for completing assigned paperwork in a timely manner. 

  • Prepared to substitute teach periodically. Understand the educator’s routine, lesson plans, and how to run the class. 

  • Regularly communicate educational and risk issues with the cross-functional team. 

  • Strive to meet continuous quality improvement measures. 

  • Provide any needed support for daily morning arrivals and afternoon dismissals. 

  • Actively participate in and/or complete all professional development requirements, including trainings, readings, and pertinent certifications. 

  • Participate in on-call schedule as needed. 

  • Perform other duties as requested. 

  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Associate degree in education and/or early childhood education. Bachelor’s degree preferred. 

  • 2+ years’ experience as a Teacher Assistant or Paraprofessional, working with children in a preschool or classroom environment. 

  • Teaching English as a Second Language certification or Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages certification preferred. 

  • Fluency in both English and Spanish required; all agency documentation is required in English, while most classroom instruction is in Spanish.  

  • Able to pass a criminal background check.  

  • Proficient use of modern classroom technologies including proficient use of desktop and laptop computers, internet search, people management programs, smart phones and tablets, printers, fax machines and photocopiers as well as software including word processing, spreadsheet and database programs. 

 

OTHER SKILLS 

  • Passionate about the development and well-being of children, commitment to teaching, and serving immigrant and refugee children.  

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of an extended cross-functional team. 

  • A willingness to work flexible and non-traditional hours with a possibility of being on call on nights/weekends, in the service of foster caregivers, families of origin, and persons served.

The Assistant Educator must be able to effectively work with and be respectful and sensitive to persons from various cultures, socioeconomic, ethnic, gender, gender identity, sexual identity, disability, religious, and racial backgrounds.
