Job description

Nature of Work

The Behavior Health Coach provides high-quality coaching, guided reflection and modeling to Head Start and Early Head Start classroom staff on best practices related to early learning and supporting the development of children in compliance with comprehensive Head Start Performance Standards. The Behavior Health Coach assists in the implementation of positive behavior support strategies.


Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED with a minimum of two years of professional experience in Early Childhood Special Education Services, preferably in a social service and/or early childhood education environment. Associates Degree preferred.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Content Development and Consultation

  • Develops and disseminates resources and best practices for the process of implementing

Behavioral support strategies and conscious discipline strategies and techniques.

  • Promotes continuous quality improvement and quality assurance efforts for the agency.
  • Provide assistance and consultation to assure that written policies and procedures are kept current.
  • Ensure that all safe environment practices are followed to safeguard the health and safety of both staff and children.


Classroom Time

  • Provide mentoring support to teaching staff, resource assistants, resource family advocates, child family advocates and program implementers in providing RCCDC children and families with warm and nurturing learning environments which offer varied culturally respectful experiences that support individual social, intellectual, physical, and emotional development.
  • Accounting, supervising and monitoring children at all times and respond appropriately to crisis or emergency situations that may occur.
  • Implement prescribed behavior strategies and positive behavior support
  • Provide the necessary interaction and environment that facilitates maximum child development and involvement
  • Establish a positive classroom climate
  • Guide the behavior of children in positive, effective ways
  • De-escalate behavior by using connecting and calming measures
  • Physically prepared to effectively manage and restrain children with aggressive behaviors.
  • Collaborate with the Teacher, special education service providers (speech, PT,OT), and other Assistant Teachers to address children's needs in the classroom
  • Attend to individual and group needs
  • Participate in specialist/center staffing's as needed while remaining ethical, culturally sensitive and aware of the diversity of staff and the families RCCDC serves


Coaching and Mentoring

  • Facilitates peer-to-peer learning both one-on-one or group settings in joint process of capacity-building strategies.
  • Provides skill development and mentoring to staff progressing in their position by performing on-the job coaching of specific skills.
  • Facilitating the development, implementation, and coordination of internal support plans (action plans, behavior plans) with parents, teachers and Center Managers
  • Supports the processional development of all staff by delivering coaching and technical assistance.


Training

  • Assist with designing and delivering component area training to staff and parents.
  • Collaborate with community organizations to collect and disseminate additional information.


Communication and Partnership

  • Provide an atmosphere that promotes and reinforces parental engagement. Modeling appropriate behavior and positive guidance techniques
  • Maintains a cooperative attitude of working together with center staff, volunteers, parents, management staff.
  • Maintains a positive, calm attitude and a soft voice, and encourages this attitude and voice in others
  • Shares information with teachers and assistants related to the RCCDC program procedures.


Miscellaneous

  • Attend meetings, training and professional development activities as needed or requested by Supervisor
  • Other duties as assigned


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge and experience in Early Childhood Education, Developmentally Appropriate Practices, Behavior Health Strategies, and Conscious Discipline Techniques.
  • Broad based knowledge and experience in computer applications and systems, i.e. database, spread sheet, word processing, power-point, e-mail and internet.
  • Ability to utilize agency resources and technology to appropriately answer questions and provide technical support to staff.
  • Demonstrated training skills, ability to provide presentations to small and large groups.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Intermediate to advanced level computer skills, internet and e-mail.
  • Ability to work in a professional manner both independently and with others in a team environment.
  • Working knowledge of Bulletin 137 licensing regulations.
  • Diplomacy and human relations skills required.
  • Ability to handle highly stressful and sensitive situations in a professional manner while maintaining emotional intelligence.


Special Considerations

Employees within this classification are required to:

  • Obtain a Louisiana Child Care Criminal Background Check Determination of Eligibility
  • Pass a physical examination every three years
  • Maintain a valid driver's license with a driving record in compliance with RCCDC's insurance carrier requirements
  • Be able to frequently sit, work at computer keyboard and desk, and stand to file misc. documents in filing cabinets.
  • Be able to maintain regular and punctual onsite attendance
  • Be able to travel to home visits and trainings
  • Be able to travel overnight as required
  • Be able to travel to assigned sites.
  • Be able to sustain concentration and ability to handle multiple tasks often simultaneously.
  • Be able to bend, stoop and kneel and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent kneeling, stooping, bending, and sitting on the floor to attend to children's need.
  • Be able to perform duties in an active environment with changes in climate and noise level.
