Description
The Kentucky Board of Barbering is committed to meeting the needs of our licensees as it relates to protecting and serving the general public. Our focus is on people: our students, our licensees, and our employees. In this position, you will be expected to conduct inspections on behalf of the Kentucky Board of Barbering in order to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements set forth in KRS Chapter 317 and 201 KAR Chapter 14.
By joining our agency, you will have an opportunity to travel throughout assigned service area, meeting with shop owners and barbers face-to-face. You will be inspecting shops, verifying licensure, and participating in investigations. Our focus is to protect the public by making sure anyone offering services to the public in general holds the proper credentials.
Holders of the Barber Shop Inspector position will complete tasks such as:
  • Conduct and coordinate inspections of barbershops and schools in assigned geographic areas.
  • New shops: by evaluating and determining compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Existing shops: by evaluating and determining compliance with regulatory requirements (twice a year) In order for barbershops and schools to remain open.
  • Complaints: by evaluating and determining compliance with regulatory requirements as a result of a complaint received by the board of an existing shop or school.
  • Assist the Administrator with conducting inspections outside their assigned geographic area(s) as needed.
Holders of this job should:
  • Understand the importance of confidentiality and be willing to work with discretion; as sharing of inspection findings outside of the report to the Board is unacceptable.
  • Be flexible and adaptable with scheduling needs in order to accommodate licensee needs and unexpected changes as well as responding to complaints with prompt investigations.
  • Have excellent organizational skills and be able to prioritize work in order to ensure two inspections per year for shops and schools, in addition to completing new barbershop inspection and investigate complaints promptly
  • Maintain professional etiquette when conducting inspections on behalf of the Board.
  • Possess skills to interpret the regulatory requirements in order to properly evaluate for compliance.
  • Have an eye for detail in inspecting for cleanliness, adherence to prescribed methods of sanitation, and evaluating values and physical requirements established by the Board.
  • Have proficiency with the use of cellular technology for scheduling and communication purposes.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have two years of experience as a licensed barber.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Must be licensed as a barber by the Kentucky Board of Barbering. http://barbering.ky.gov/ Must maintain any required licensure (s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Travel will be required to conduct inspections. Exposure to products, chemicals and instruments used in a Barber Shop. Perform work in all weather conditions.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
