Job Summary
Under limited supervision, performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of automotive, heavy-duty and industrial equipment.
Responsibilities
Conducts highly skilled mechanical, fluid and electro-mechanical work, in the repair and overhaul of a wide variety of motorized equipment including automobiles, trucks, tractors, cranes and specialized trucks. Repairs, overhauls and maintains automobiles, light and Heavy-duty gasoline and diesel trucks, backhoes, trenchers and small engines. Completes electrical wiring on trailers, trucks and tractors as necessary. Participates in troubleshooting electrical systems using schematic diagrams to repair starters, voltage regulators, computerized fuel injection systems, and ignition modules. Coordinates the removal, repairs and installation of booms on electrical bucket and winch trucks, hydraulic cylinders, hydraulic pumps and ring gears, transmissions, differentials, axles, clutches, steering and air brake assemblies. Reviews work/job orders with supervisor(s) to obtain descriptions of vehicle problems, and to discuss work to be performed and future repair requirements. Responds to customers' needs and concerns in a timely manner. Ensures all repairs and services are made in accordance with manufactures' specifications, and State and Federal Regulations. Keeps working area clean and orderly. Conducts work activities in a safe and responsible manner. Completes fabrication on vehicles and equipment to facilitate operations, i.e., steps, hand rails, ladders, etc. Completes repairs on vehicle air conditioning and water-cooling systems. Completes preventive maintenance (PM) and oil and filter changes. Responds to field calls to troubleshoot and repair "downed" equipment. Prepares new equipment preparation for delivery. Completes other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks and other related heavy and light motorized equipment and vehicles. Knowledge of the standard methods and practices of automotive repair, as well as the tools and equipment of the trade. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade, including knowledge of mechanical maintenance of heavy machinery and chemical handling equipment. Knowledgeable in the use of all types of measuring devices such as micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, alignment tools, etc. Knowledge in rigging and use of overhead cranes, chain pullers and hoists, and block and tackle for lifting or moving heavy loads. Knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred. Knowledge of all safety practices and standards in shop operation and equipment repair. Skill in the use and care of the standard tools and equipment used in motorized equipment and vehicle repair and maintenance. Strong oral and written communication skills in English. Ability to locate and adjust mechanical defects in engines and equipment and to make necessary repairs. Ability to meet the physical demands as outlined below. Ability to understand and follow assignments and complex instructions received in the form of oral and/or written work orders. Ability to function as a team player. Ability to work independently after six (6) months of employment when "on-duty" calls.
Education & Experience Requirements
High School Diploma or GED required or satisfactory approved equivalent and three (3) years' experience in general automobile or truck maintenance and repairs or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Automotive degree preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Requires a valid Texas Commercial Class A Driver License and a safe driving record, as measured by company policy.
A State of Texas Motor Vehicle Inspector Certification is preferred.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Must be able to lift approximately 100 lbs. Must be able to perform manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance under variable weather conditions i.e., bending, squatting, stretching, lifting, pulling, pushing, twisting and climbing. Work entails constant bending and lifting. Must be able to work under different kinds of equipment, backhoes, trucks, line trucks, sedans, etc. Must be able to work under adverse weather conditions including, but not limited to, sunshine, rain, sleet, and 20 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit temperature extremes. Must be able to stretch reach, overhead reach, and place the body in awkward positions to perform work. Must maintain good physical condition to do continuous physical work for minimum of eight hours.
