Automation and Controls Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY: The controls and maintenance engineer will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair of manufacturing equipment and control systems. They will also be responsible for developing and implementing preventative maintenance programs and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The engineer will work closely with production teams to optimize equipment performance and minimize downtime. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Must be willing to travel.
• Provide guidelines for the design and selection of manufacturing and test equipment
• Support, service, and trouble shoot test equipment and electrical systems within the plant
• Performs root cause and failure analysis
• As the plant's expert in robotics, PLCs, sensors, and more, they oversee design, integration, and implementation
• Develop equipment specifications ensuring compliance with electrical safe work practices and OSHA requirements
• Conduct and/or coordinate regular maintenance of production equipment to ensure maximum uptime and reliability
• Troubleshoot and repair equipment breakdowns in a timely and efficient manner
• Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to minimize downtime and increase productivity
• Analyze equipment performance data and make recommendations for improvements
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair work performed
• Collaborate with other engineers and production staff to identify and solve maintenance-related issues
• Provide training and support to production staff on equipment operation and maintenance procedures
• Stay up to date with emerging trends and technologies in maintenance engineering and apply them to improve existing equipment and processes
• Develop and design control systems, and implement bench tests

• Alter software and equipment to ensure that sensors and actuators are functioning according to specifications
• Support and debug complex problems and change requests
• Prepare cost estimates, compile required cost and equipment information, and write and review appropriation requests
• Investigate problems and requirements of projects, and develop plans for solutions in line with economic, personnel, and environmental considerations
• Be responsible for the installation and technical support of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) based hardware and software
• Coach and mentor less experienced Controls Engineers
• Apply controls hardware and software by specifying, reviewing, and approving company-owned and/or supplier designs for new or upgrades to existing equipment to interface with all levels of manufacturing systems
• Implement new and improved technologies and methods capable of transferring information from multiple inputs either within a local production process or into databases to link machines together or to analyze the process for overall operation enhancements
• Recognize controls related hazards in a manufacturing environment (Electrical, Hydraulic, Pneumatic) to incorporate safe practices and procedures as part of the daily work plan to reduce injuries and create a safe machine environment
• Analyze an electrical control system to resolve and repair electrical issues to return the system to proper operating conditions
• Implement changes to further automate manufacturing processes using available technology, programming techniques, and identifying needed material and resources for project completion to provide the optimum automation for the manufacturing environment
• Champion and model proactive health and safety behaviors by identifying, reporting, and participating in actions to improve health and safety to build an interdependent culture and contribute to an injury-free workplace
• Use digital tools to model and simulate manufacturing processes, equipment, and performance to make data-driven decisions before changes are made and to drive continuous improvements
• Apply prognostics techniques by collecting real-time equipment conditions and then use advanced analytics and artificial intelligence technologies to project future failures to eliminate unplanned equipment and systems downtime
• Develop and implement Controls System Security by specifying, reviewing, and approving company-owned and/or supplier designs for new equipment or upgrades to existing equipment to ensure our manufacturing controls and systems are secure
• Select and apply the sensor technology, performing measurements in the acquired data that leads to the correct analysis and conclusion to help differentiate products that meet quality standards from non-conforming products
• Integrate product design and manufacturing equipment engineering drawings to support the design and development of an optimal manufacturing process that meets product design specifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor's degree in Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
• Experience in Siemens controls systems
• 2+ years of experience in Controls Engineering, maintenance, and troubleshooting
• Industrial plant operations including mechanical, electrical and automation knowledge in low and AC/DC systems

• Advance Knowledge of Ladder Logic, Function Block, Structured Text, Control Loop along with associated Digital and Analog I/O and all other PLC hardware
• Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and strong communication skills are also required.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES ARE A PLUS:

• Knowledge in automation systems such as emerging PLC technologies, Industrial Cybersecurity, Virtualization, Augmented Reality, Big Data Integration / Historian Systems and IIoT (Industry 4.0)
• Assembly/fabrication equipment operation (2+ years)
• Experience in precision machining and assembly (2+ years)
• Experience in data analytics in Excel
• Experience in six sigma/lean methodologies
• Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
• Experience in Autodesk Inventor/AutoCAD,

The employee must be able to navigate using air and ground transport with moderate to extensive travel.
