Description of Work

The North Carolina Community College System (System Office) is a statewide network of 58 public community colleges. The system enrolls over 500,000 students annually. It is the 3rd largest in the nation based on the number of colleges. It also provides data to the North Carolina Learning Object Repository by collecting, contributing, and sharing digital learning resources for use in traditional or distance learning environments. The mission of the North Carolina Community College System is to open the door to high-quality, accessible educational opportunities that minimize barriers to post-secondary education, maximize student success, develop a global, multicultural, and competent workforce, and improve the lives and wellbeing of N.C. citizens. The AVP leads the Student Services unit of the Division of Programs and Services of the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), which is designed to provide state-level leadership, policy support and technical assistance to the 58 institutions of NCCCS areas of enrollment management, student support, student access, student life, and compliance with federal and state regulations. This section works collaboratively with state agencies to identify needs and implement solutions to meet agency and state-wide goals. This section also assumes responsibility for in-service training of Student development and other professionals such as Career Development Counselors, Career Coaches, Financial Aid Directors, Academic Advisors, Registrars, and Admission and Retention Counselors, Disability Services Counselors, Mentoring Counselors, and Student Leaders. NC Community Colleges are responsive drivers of economic development. With this tenet in mind, the AVP will lead efforts to ensure statewide opportunities exist for students to enter and succeed in the high-growth, evolving employment pipelines which are informed by clear academic/credential guided pathways. The AVP will lead the Student Services unit to promote a smooth experience for learners across the community college system as they navigate the process of lifelong upskilling and reskilling.

  • Management skills as a community college Vice President, associate VP, and/or dean of Students.
  • Experience with student success initiatives in North Carolina and/or community colleges.
Management Preferences:
  • Ability to implement guided pathways models that drive whole-college transformation and greater levels of community college student success.
  • Ability to interpret of state and federal community college policies, practices and programs, specifically related to student development, access and success.
  • Ability to connect high-impact practices to student success outcomes.
  • Knowledge of national student success initiatives, current developments, and trends

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an ‘equivalent combination of education and experience.’ If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Master’s degree in relevant academic discipline and four (4) years’ experience in administration and/or teaching in higher education, preferably community college experience
OR
An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.

The North Carolina Community College System Office uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions SUBJECT to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified applicants.
