Braille Institute is a non-profit organization whose mission is to positively transform the lives of those with vision loss. We offer a broad range of free programs, classes and services serving thousands of students of all ages helping to demonstrate that vision rehabilitation is a beginning, not an end.

We serve the community from seven centers, and hundreds of community outreach locations throughout Southern California, and lead popular national programs like the Braille Challenge and Cane Quest. Our staff and volunteers understand losing your vision can be scary, but we believe it is not the end of independence but a new way of living.

Job Summary: Serve as strategic partner to the Vice President of Development to increase revenue and efficiencies, year over year. Responsible for the management of the Direct Response program, Donor Relations, and Development Services staff (5 person donor services team, including AVP). Assure net positive pipeline of donors is maintained to meet and exceed annual revenue goals. Manage the integrity and maintenance of Salesforce CRM.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works directly with the Vice President of Development to establish revenue goals and strategies to achieve ambitious annual fundraising goals performed by a development team of 14 members.
  • Directs a variety of administrative operations and staff for the Development Department. Oversees telephone coverage, time keeping systems, processing check requests and invoices, ordering office supplies and equipment, and office organization.
  • Oversees the design, implementation, and evaluation of the success of an annual giving program to grow and retain a pipeline of donors. This includes the management of an outside vendor to develop our direct response program and strategies.
  • Assures department staff cultivates donors and prospects through direct mail, publications, digital media, and other communications.
  • Manages the Donor relations and stewardship program to ensure regular communication and positive relationships with donors. Directs gift acceptance and management, gift acknowledgment, donor recognition, and stewardship. Creates endowment reports for donors, as needed.
  • Directs the staff responsible for operation and maintenance of Salesforce CRM and creates reporting templates. Develops and communicates CRM policies and procedures, training, gift processing, and acknowledgment processes. Manages vendor relationships, as needed.
  • Accountable for general department management responsibilities, including hiring, training of staff, and appraisal of performance. Works directly with the Vice President to establish and communicate priorities of projects and assignments. Oversees staff development and professional growth opportunities.
  • Provides strategic direction, vision, and leadership to staff. Prepares budgets and monitors expenses. Works with gift officers and other team members to produce reports for management on productivity and results of fundraising efforts.
  • Maintains and updates all documentation, analyses, and statistics on all sources of revenue. Regularly monitors the effectiveness of current tools and subscriptions and stays up to date on new technologies.
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates the success of annual and multi-year plans for Annual Giving, Donor Relations, and Development Services. This includes weekly vendor meetings. Works in partnership with the Development Communications Manager and Marketing team to develop and implement marketing strategies including production of marketing materials, print, and digital communications.
  • Maintains current knowledge of the organization's departments, programs, and services. Attends donor, volunteer, student, and community events.
  • Assures compliance with Federal, State, and local gifting regulations. Consults with General Counsel, and Accounting Department staff regarding complex donation transactions. Manages state and local charitable registrations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. As the organization continues to evolve, duties or tasks may change without impacting the overall Job Description.

Knowledge and Education: A four-year college degree or strong knowledge of marketing and fundraising techniques and tools including legal, technical, and financial requirements is essential. Prior use of CRM management is required. Working knowledge of standard office equipment and software, financial planning and prospect research is also required.

Skills and Abilities: Position requires strong written and verbal communication skills as well as excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Good prioritization skills are needed, as well as the ability to work independently.

Experience: The position requires at least ten years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising with an emphasis on annual giving, donor stewardship, and donor research. Experience with planned gifts is highly desirable. Prior management experience is critical. The ability to secure funds from donors is required.

Pay: $155,000.00 - $170,000.00 per year
