Position Description

Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Vice President for University Personnel and the Chief Human Resource Officer, the Associate Vice President for Human Resources (AVP/HR) provides senior leadership and line management for the University's Human Resources (HR) operations. The AVP/HR has broad responsibilities for HR policy development, administration, interpretation, and implementation. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing a comprehensive Human Resources program that includes talent acquisition, compensation and classification, HR Information Systems, employee and organizational training and development, workforce analysis and planning, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and benefits administration.

The AVP for HR provides senior-level vision, innovation, and strategic organizational and managerial leadership to the campus community. This position also provides direction for compliance laws, regulations, and policies on Human Resources issues. This position effectively interfaces with campus managers and executives, staff, faculty, labor union representatives, University Legal Counsel, as well as individuals at the California State University (CSU) Office of the Chancellor, other campuses within the CSU, and external entities and agencies.

Department Summary

The Human Resources (HR) department resides within University Personnel (UP) and provides leadership and support for over 1,500+ staff and non-academic management employees in organizational development and effectiveness, professional development, position management and classification, compensation, recruitment and selection, employment, personnel policies and records, employee relations, labor relations/collective bargaining, performance management, and succession planning. HR manages comprehensive and integrated benefits administration, disability leave, fee waiver, HR information systems (HRIS), volunteer and employment verification programs, and employee information security for over 3,000 faculty, management, and staff employees.

Key Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to attract and retain quality people in support of the mission of Human Resources.
  • Demonstrated excellent supervisory and planning skills and success in building Human Resources or similar functions into strategic units in large and complex organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate and analyze problems, utilize creative problem-solving skills with the ability to reason logically, exercise good judgement and discretion, develop imaginative and innovative solutions, negotiate, and resolve highly sensitive, complex and/or unprecedented problems.
  • Legal understanding of and proven ability to apply California and federal non-discrimination laws.
  • Demonstrated commitment to be consultative and collaborative and the ability to develop cooperative working relationships at all levels of the University.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a field such as Business Administration, Public Administration, Human Resource Management, Labor Relations, or another relevant field. Successful track record of leadership experience in an administrative capacity, which includes a minimum of eight years of experience in all facets of Human Resources for a large and complex organization and five years of supervisory experience, including the supervision of professional staff. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Salary and Benefits

The anticipated hiring range for this role is $180,000 - $215,000 per year. Note that the offer is calculated based on the background and relevant years of experience of the individual selected.
