Position Description:
Associate Principal Scientist Vaccines DiscoveryInterface Molecular Biologist
The Analytical Research and Development team in West Point, PA is seeking an exceptional scientist who is passionate about leading innovative science and solving complex analytical problems to facilitate vaccine development from target identification through clinical candidate selection.
The Associate Principal Scientist within the department of Cell Based Sciences will join our vaccines team working at the discovery-development interface in West Point, PA. In this role, the individual will provide analytical solutions to support clinical success of live, recombinant, conjugate, and other types of vaccines across a wide array of diseases. We seek a candidate with expertise in vaccine development who will apply that knowledge to new vaccines. The successful candidate will influence program strategy and lead the application of scientific innovation and technology to impact the vaccine portfolio. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills and an ability and passion for mentoring and working alongside others in a laboratory setting.
The primary role of the successful candidate will be to provide analytical solutions for successful developability of new vaccines at the Discovery Interface. The individual will enable and accelerate vaccine process development by applying molecular biology expertise. The ideal candidate should bring expertise in a wide variety of methods and technology for assessment of vaccine mechanism of action and potency with an emphasis on subject matter expertise related to molecular biology including DNA/RNA isolation and detection, transcription and translation activation, cloning, constitutive / inducible expression of target genes, accumulation of cytoplasmic proteins, and stability of genetic sequences.
Position Qualification:
Education Minimum Requirement:
  • A degree in molecular biology, microbiology, virology, cell biology, immunology, infectious disease, or related field is required:
  • Ph.D. with a minimum of 4+ years relevant experience or
  • M.S. with a minimum of 8+ years or
  • B.S. with a minimum of 12 years of experience in a related biotechnology field.

Required Experience and Skills:
  • Strong scientific and technical expertise in molecular biology techniques such as PCR, digital PCR, in situ hybridization, NGS, RNAseq, single cell sequencing, , genetic integration sites, nucleic acid:protein interactions and/or ligand binding to characterize vaccines.
  • Demonstrated ability for taking initiative, creativity and innovation in problem solving while applying the scientific method.
  • Ability to work independently to develop and design experiments, mentor junior scientists, critically evaluate data, and apply excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience in solving complex problems as an individual and as part of an inclusive, and collaborative team.
  • Experience with vaccine development

Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Background in laboratory automation, biostatistics, and/or information management systems is desirable.
  • Vaccine background including diverse modalities and expression systems such as bacterial expression systems, live-attenuated vaccines, VLP, mRNA, protein subunit, and adjuvants.
  • Strong scientific and technical expertise in cell-based assays for live-virus vaccines such as reporter gene assays, TCID50, plaque, infectivity and qPCR.
