Associate Editor, Quantum Information
Who we are:
The American Physical Society (APS) is a nonprofit membership organization working to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics through its outstanding research journals, scientific meetings, and education, outreach, advocacy, and international activities. APS represents more than 50,000 members, including physicists in academia, national laboratories, and industry in the United States and throughout the world.
Position Summary:
The Associate Editor will decide on publishing the most exciting and consequential results in quantum science and technologies, conducting a thorough and high-quality peer-review process. For that, we seek a talented candidate with deep research experience in Quantum Information at the postdoctoral level and outstanding communication skills. A successful candidate will work with the editorial team of PRX Quantum, interacting with top leaders in the field. The Associate Editor will also be responsible for engaging and building connections with scientists from this highly multidisciplinary research community. Expertise in quantum computing and algorithms is a plus.

Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate the scientific content and impact of manuscripts in a critical and independent manner.
  • Manage all aspects of peer review, including deciding on desk-rejection, selecting referees, communicating with authors and referees, resolving conflicting recommendations, and deciding on publication, based on the journal's acceptance criteria and scope.
  • Perform editorial checks to ensure the overall quality and timeliness of published papers.
  • Actively participate in everyday journal initiatives, such as highlighting and social media.
  • Represent the journals and APS at world-wide scientific conferences. Ability to travel internationally is a requirement.
  • Actively engage and develop strong relationships and trust with a broad network of researchers, including Editorial Board members.
  • Contribute to journal-level projects and strategy, such as attracting top content, article commissioning, organizing outreach events, hold presentations, and data analytics.
  • Gain mastery of the peer-review management system.
  • Support the manuscript post acceptance process, as needed, including the acquisition of editorial summaries and images, and actions to solve production issues.
  • Maintain high ethical standards and fairness at all editorial stages, ensuring that decisions align with editorial policy and practice
  • Participate in editorial and cross-departmental projects to meet and support the goals of APS.
  • Actively contribute to ensuring the journals are diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

Education:
  • A PhD is required, in Physics, Engineering, or Computer Science. Postdoctoral experience is required.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • A minimum of one year of postdoctoral experience is required.
  • Published in major journals within the scope of PRX Quantum.
  • Proven referee experience in the topical areas of PRX Quantum.
  • Candidates with considerable editorial experience in handling manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, and demonstrated impact on that role, may qualify for a senior position.
  • Excellent knowledge of the scientific literature in Quantum Information, existing research groups in the area of coverage, and acute awareness of current developments.
  • Passion for learning and sharing research in Quantum Information.
  • A strong sense of integrity.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Excellent command of written English.
  • Capable of being detail-oriented without losing sight of the big picture.
  • The ability to make independent decisions and evaluations.
  • The ability to apply journal policies and practices and make sound editorial judgments.
  • Knowledge of Web-based manuscript handling and databases.
  • A strong sense of responsibility and a commitment to the job.
  • Ability to work well with interdepartmental teams as well as independently.

Travel:
This role involves occasional travel, approximately up to 10%, for meetings with APS staff, departmental gatherings, and interactions with colleagues in the Long Island, NY, Washington, DC and College Park, MD areas. Additionally, the position requires world-wide travel to attend conferences and events, and to interact with researchers at their institutions and universities.
Salary:
The salary range for this role considers the factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, and other business and organizational needs. APS's Compensation Philosophy is to manage salaries at the midpoint of the market. Therefore, it is the practice to hire within the entry - midpoint range.
Full Range: $77,985k/year - $116,978k/year (USD)
Target Range: $77,985k/year - $97,481k/year (USD)
Work Environment:
Our Editorial Offices are located on Long Island. We are operational in most US states. The Editorial Department allows flexible work hours; responsiveness is required, however, during the core 9 am to 5pm Eastern Standard Time workday. The successful candidate will join a collaborative international team of editors across the Physical Review journals.
