Job description

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks an experienced editor and newsroom leader to lead its investigative journalism around the world. The successful candidate will have the primary responsibility of producing distinct, exclusive journalism in all media formats that makes news with the power and depth of its reporting; breaks news that merits headlines and attention around the world; and is always visually engaging and impactful.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Vice President for News and Head of Investigations, Enterprise, Partnerships and Grants, the Global Investigations Editor will oversee both rapid-fire investigations stemming from breaking news and deeply reported longer-term projects, with the goal of producing journalism that is global in scope and groundbreaking in its approach. In this role, you will directly supervise a team of investigative editors, reporters and visual journalists, and collaborate closely with colleagues in other AP departments, including data and enterprise journalists, topic beat teams and regional reporters. You will deliver ambitious storytelling that infuses the global AP with an investigative ethos.

We're looking for someone who will:

  • have a demonstrated history of editing investigative reporting, with a record of leading reporters and visual journalists to complete compelling work on deadline and produce in-depth enterprise projects.
  • lead a team of investigative reporters, editors and visual journalists in various locations around the world to deliver compelling spot and enterprise stories that break news, have global impact and are exclusive to the AP.
  • work collaboratively and successfully as the leader of a diverse team of journalists who work to produce journalism in all media formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • be conversant in multi-format journalism, including visual and open source investigative techniques, and craft an investigative report that tells stories in multiple ways to serve AP's wide-ranging customers and audiences.
  • pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP's standards for integrity and objectivity.

Preferred Qualifications: The Global Investigations Editor must have demonstrated excellence as an investigative reporter, editor and/or producer, with a deep record of guiding reporters, editors and visual journalists to deliver impactful projects and investigations that make news with the power of their reporting. A history of managing journalists working in more than one format is a plus. You must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to support, motivate, innovate, coordinate and connect with journalists in all corners of the AP's global newsroom. Applicants should have at least five years of full-time experience as a member or leader of an investigative team at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk. You must have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends, as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
  • Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats.

Application Deadline:  January 5, 2024 @ 11:59 PM ET

AP seeks to build an inclusive organization grounded in respect for differences. We support all aspects of diversity and provide equal employment opportunity to all employees and applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, marital status, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or status as a veteran. We encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply.
