Job Summary:

The Analysis & Test Department of the Mechanical Engineering Directorate is seeking an experienced Thermal Analyst with working knowledge and documented experience in the area of Thermal Analysis and Test activities in support of all phases of programs including proposal, development and production. This includes developing and optimizing designs to work with high temperature materials, in multiple operating environments spanning the range of flight conditions. This position is in Tucson, AZ.


Responsibilities to Anticipate:

As a core team member your tasks will include:

  • Analyze complex missile structures via classical and/or advanced methods of analysis.
  • Articulate risk to various internal and external customers based on data driven solutions.
  • Drive the final design working in a collaborative multi-disciplined environment
  • Analyses will cover a wide range of difficult problems, requiring solutions that are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organization objectives. The analyses will span the spectrum from classical methods to detailed numerical solutions using computer methods and finite element analysis. Working independently or coordinating the efforts of a team, the select candidate will be expected to define the scope and level of analysis required to meet required objectives and will be held accountable for completing the work within the agreed upon cost and schedule. Serving as an organizational spokesperson the selected candidate will act as an advisor to management and customers on critical design decisions. The candidate will be expected to effectively present work products in internal and external reviews and provide expert counseling and mentoring.
  • You will be expected to lead diverse teams, providing technical experience developing critical thermal load cases - balancing mechanical loads and thermal loads oversight and task delegation. The customers of this position will include internal Raytheon personnel and programs as well as external Government(s) personnel and programs. You will work with the customer and engineering leadership to define testing required to validate Thermal analyses and to verify that hardware is compliant with requirements. Collaborate with the Structural analysts to analyze the Thermal integrity of thermal isolation designs including thermal protection system integration with airframe.

BasicQualifications:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 12 years of prior Thermal Analysis experience, OR and Advance degree in a related field and a minimum of 9 years’ experience.
  • Experience performing Thermal Finite Element Analysis using PATRAN, ANSYS or equivalent software.
  • Experience with at least two of the following: aerodynamic heating analysis, system Thermal Analysis, electronics Thermal Analysis for high temperature systems, thermal modeling of ablative systems, combined aero-thermal structural interactions analysis and thermal environmental test.
  • Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Master’s in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering
  • 20 plus years of professional experience in the Thermal analysis of complex systems that require collaboration of multiple engineering disciplines
  • Ability to travel to government and other facilities in support of programs
  • Thermal integrity analysis to assess Margin of Safety as well as failure.
  • Experience with electronic reliability standards and/or analysis approaches
  • Experience estimates aerodynamic heating at a variety of fidelity levels from empirical correlations to fully-coupled CFD with chemistry
  • Experience performing classical methods based on fundamental equations for fluid flow, convection, radiation, and conduction.
  • Experience defining the thermal architecture required for both transient and steady-state thermal systems.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience working with thermal protection systems and materials.
  • Proficiency analyzing thermal protective systems and defining test methods to prove out thermal protective system designs.
  • Experience with quartz lamp, arc jet, wind tunnel and other test methods to quantify aerodynamic heating conditions and correlate aerodynamic heating models.
  • Supporting development testing for material characterization as well as subcomponent and flight testing
  • Demonstrated experience in providing electronics cooling thermal management solutions for passively and actively cooled thermal systems.
  • Familiarity with analysis approaches for heat pipes, cooling loops, thermoelectric coolers and heat exchangers.
  • Definition and execution of ground test of Thermally critical phenomena
  • Ability to travel to government and other facilities in support of program activities
  • Strong interpersonal skills working in a team environment with positive interaction.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills; both verbal and written

The salary range for this role is 143,000 USD - 287,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Specific benefits are dependent upon the specific business unit as well as whether or not the position is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement.

Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and whether or not it is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
