North Shore Animal League America is the largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization in the world. We are a non-profit organization and since 1944, the League's mission has been saving the lives of pets through adoption, rescue and advocacy initiatives. Every year, the League reaches across the country to rescue, nurture and adopt nearly 18,000 pets into happy and loving homes. Over the years, the League has placed more than 1.1 million puppies, kittens, cats and dogs into carefully screened homes.
We are seeking a full time Associate Shelter Director that will manage the shelter’s day-to-day operations as well as the shelter staff and volunteers. Maximize adoptions through successful supervision and training team leaders, staff and a focus on the development of managers. Ensure the general health and well-being of the animals. Make sure the organizations policies and procedures are met. Execute a wide variety of supervisory and administrative tasks.
This position is full time 40 hours per week. You will be required to work 1 weekend shift .Shift hours are a combination of 6:00am - 2:00pm, 10:00 am - 6:00pm and 12:00pm to 9:00/close.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Responsible for oversight of the overall day-to-day operations of the shelter.
· Perform the day-to-day operational tasks in the absence of the Shelter Director.
· Assist the Shelter Director with the supervision, motivation, and development of lead Kennel
managers and Team Leaders.
· Perform daily, routine inspections of the shelter.
· Ensure the safety, sanitation and upkeep of the shelter facility and maintenance of shelter.
· Overseeing that BFF, the shelter, ark and grounds are keep clean, organized and repaired when
needed.
· Equipment; ensure proper cleaning protocols are followed on a daily basis; and make
recommendations regarding effective space utilization at the shelter and work process improvements.
· Responsible for the ongoing training and development of staff and volunteers.
· Communicate quality standards for each area, and monitor performance in light of those standards.
· Interview, hire, train and retain Managers and Team Leaders.
· Interview, hire, train, counsel, and evaluate kennel staff associates.
· Make recommendations for staff transfers and promotions based on associate performance and potentials.
· Monitor associates performance-ensuring adherence to proper kennel procedures and policies.
· Provide feedback and suggestions as to further development of newly hired associates to the Kennel Managers via the 45 and 90-day reviews, as well as annual associate reviews.
· Respond to employee issues or conflicts and manage disciplinary action when appropriate.
· Respond to adopter complaints and/or ensure adopter follow-up communication is handled appropriately.
· Work with the Associate Director of Volunteers & In-home Foster Care Programs and the Kennel Managers to ensure the volunteers are assigned managers, are receiving adequate training, and are being supervised appropriately.
· Work with the Foster Care Manager on getting felines/canines pending medical or in need of socialization into foster homes.
· Work with the Shelter Medical team, ensuring animals are being seen in a timely fashion, and that any medical concerns with specific animals are being addressed appropriately.
· Work with the Pet Behavior department to ensure that the canines are being evaluated in a timely manner and that pet holds and behavior holds are being addressed appropriately.
· Work with the Communications department to ensure animals are selected and held for media opportunities and/or provide appropriate handlers when necessary.
· Devise ways to increase and improve adoptions.
· Work with the Managers to ensure a nice animal selection and make sure there is an adequate number of animals to reach goals.
· Work with the Managers to ensure animals are being rotated on the adoption floor and that animals on hold for various reasons are provided with a plan.
· Ensure that the Managers and Team Leaders are providing adequate enrichment for both the canines as well as felines.
· Oversee canine and feline photos, videos, and Facebook Lives are taking place weekly to promote our available animals for adoption.
· Create weekly manager schedule.
· Keep current on all Animal League America events.
· Maintain working knowledge of all support areas as well as all departments of Animal League America.
· Other duties and projects as assigned.
Requirements:
- Three (3) years supervisory/management experience in an animal-related facility a MUST!
- Must be able to organize, execute, and report on work activities without direct supervision; lead a team of employees.
- Must be administratively detailed and enjoy working with animals.
- Proficient in Microsoft applications.
- Maintain a culture of teamwork, superior customer service and commitment to the well-being of all animals in our care.
- Strong knowledge of animal welfare: including care, handling, health, behavior and sheltering issues.
- Previous animal-related work experience a plus. Must have the ability to train, develop and motivate staff.
- Strong leadership ability.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other departments and senior management.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, ability to bend, twist and turn on a consistent basis, and ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time.

Pay: $64,400.00 - $68,000.00 per year
