Associate Director, Scientific Computing, Data Driven Discovery for Biology

The Data-Driven Discovery Center for Biology (D3B) is committed to pioneering the future of bioscience research by leveraging state-of-the-art computational techniques and data analytics. The Associate Director of Scientific Computing at D3B plays a vital role in steering the center's computational strategy and fostering an environment where innovation and collaboration thrive. This leader is tasked with guiding and mentoring a talented team of data scientists and software engineers, ensuring the successful execution of data science projects that align with the center's scientific missions. They are responsible for the architectural design and implementation of robust software engineering infrastructure, vital for supporting advanced research and data analysis. A key part of the role involves the strategic management of budgets and investments in AI, ML, and data science technologies, while also nurturing essential partnerships with external vendors and research entities. Staying abreast of the latest developments in AI and computer science, they will translate cutting-edge research into actionable strategies, providing exceptional infrastructure support to the center's personnel and affiliates. The ultimate goal is to position D3B as a leading authority at the nexus of AI/ML and computational biology, leveraging public engagement and scholarly collaborations to advance the field.

Essential Functions

  • Direct and mentor teams of data scientists and software engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment
  • Oversee the development and execution of data science projects, ensuring alignment with the center's scientific objectives
  • Own the design and implementation of the center’s software engineering infrastructure, supporting cutting-edge research and data analysis
  • Ensure the infrastructure is scalable, reliable, and secure to meet the evolving needs of the center
  • Oversee budgeting for software engineering and data science initiatives, managing costs effectively
  • Guide strategic investment in data science, AI, and ML technologies, aligning with the center’s research agenda
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with software vendors, research labs, and cloud service providers
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest advancements in AI, ML, and computer science research and translate these into applicable strategies for the center
  • Provide top-tier engineering infrastructure support for affiliates, fellows, engineers, data scientists, and research personnel
  • Work towards establishing D3B as a renowned voice in the intersection of AI/ML and computational biology through public speaking, publications, and collaborations

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Computational Biology, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant postbac experience
  • Proven track record of leading data science and software engineering teams in a research or academic setting
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing large-scale software engineering infrastructure
  • Ability to effectively allocate resources and manage financial aspects of large-scale projects
  • Deep understanding of current AI and ML technologies and their applications in scientific research
  • Ability to integrate the latest advancements in AI/ML into practical applications for the center
  • Established relationships with software vendors, research labs, and cloud service providers, or demonstrated ability to build such relationships
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to effectively engage with internal and external stakeholders
  • Passion for leveraging computational technologies to drive advancements in biology, neuroscience, and immunology
  • Demonstrated ability to translate scientific needs into technological solutions
  • Ability to foresee and integrate emerging trends in computer science, AI/ML, and data science into the center’s strategy

  • Practical experience in developing scalable software solutions tailored for scientific research needs
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor and motivate a diverse team of technical professionals
  • Adept at strategic planning and execution within a scientific research context
  • Advanced knowledge of the latest trends in AI/ML and their applications to computational biology
  • Demonstrated initiative in fostering innovation and continuous improvement in a dynamic research environment

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This role is currently able to work both remotely and onsite in a hybrid work environment. We are a Washington State employer, and the primary work location for all Allen Institute employees is 615 Westlake Ave N.

Travel

  • Occasional local travel to alternate locations such as warehouses or data centers
  • Occasional attendance and participation in national and international conferences

Annualized Salary Range

  • $186,150 - $260,600 *
  • Final salary depends on the required education for the role, experience, level of skills relevant to the role, and work location, where applicable.
