Job description

The Associate Director of Culture and Inclusion will: serve as the lead and touchpoint for culture, inclusion, diversity, equity, access, accountability, and change initiatives at the Libraries and Press; expand beyond the scope of existing strategic priorities and energize the libraries’ efforts to cultivate a learning and belonging culture that advances inclusive excellence.

The Associate Director will use an equity lens and other applicable tools to support the creation and implementation of inclusive strategic priorities and goals; and organize, advocate for, and facilitate programs and training to bolster skill sets among employees. The Associate Director will lead these efforts under the leadership of the Director of Organizational Development and Diversity (ODD) and will collaborate with the libraries' leadership team.

The Associate Director will work in a collective bargaining environment and have daily access to sensitive and confidential staff and candidate information and material; discretion, judgment, and diplomacy is critical.

Please Note: The anticipated salary range is $81,000 – $95,000. Offers are dependent on experience, education, and equity within Northwestern University. Specific Responsibilities:

Culture and Inclusion Strategy

  • Assess organization’s readiness for large transformational change and develop recommendations and strategy related to culture, inclusion and change management.
  • Coordinate all disparate inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (DEIA) efforts across the Libraries and Press in a cohesive manner. Provide a practical framework to sponsor and encourage a growth mindset around inclusive excellence and belonging.
  • Provide a broad range of consultative services with senior leadership on performance, organizational and leadership matters, mentoring, upskilling training, recruiting, belonging, and Inclusion.
  • Foster and kickstart employee-driven initiatives aimed at boosting organizational morale and engagement and addressing employee requests for training, facilitation, and education. Continuously assess and gauge the effectiveness of these programs to ensure objectives are met.
  • Identify and establish a dedicated repository for culture, inclusion, change management priorities and other training initiatives within the library. Consistently maintain and enhance this repository, while also employing a matrix to evaluate the progress of programs and the performance of staff.
  • Conduct quarterly meetings to inform staff of progress and solicit feedback. Serve as representative for ODD in libraries and on campus to coordinate meetings amongst constituents to advance libraries’ initiatives.

Human Resources

  • Assist with employee engagement, recruitment, recognition, and retention initiatives.
  • Serve as the ODD equity representative at job interviews.
  • Recommend changes and improvements to HR and administrative operations to better meet organizational needs and goals.
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, and regulatory changes in the employment life cycle and apply this knowledge to communicate recommendations for changes in policy and practice.
  • Assist with other ODD functions as needed.

Staff Development

  • Identify gaps, formulate change management strategies, develop training/upskilling programs, and design evaluation matrix.
  • Run effective advocacy workshops and advise senior leadership team on best practices as set forth at the institutional level.
  • Consult with NU Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion (OIDI) and the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accountability (IDEA) leaders 'group, and other stakeholders to provide professional development, change management, and growth opportunities related to culture, belonging, and Inclusion to libraries staff.

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)

  • 4-year degree in the social sciences, Human Resources, Organizational Psychology, Organizational Development, Counseling, or a related field.
  • 3 or more years of broad and demonstrable communication, facilitation, instruction, and presentation skills.
  • 3 years of project management experience.
  • In-depth experience leading, designing, and fostering inclusion, diversity and change management or multicultural education and programming.
  • Strong background in research design, data analysis, project evaluation and responding effectively to data trends.
  • Computer skills and knowledge appropriate to perform duties of the position.
  • Intermediate experience with Microsoft Suite.

  • Prior experience working with and contributing to a diverse workplace.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a broad range of constituents at the libraries and on campus.
  • Experience facilitating and delivering workshops, discussions, training, and leading with empathy.
  • Demonstrated strategic and analytical skills and the ability to conceptualize, organize, and coordinate programs.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated high level of initiative and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accountability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)

  • Experience working in a higher education setting.
  • Certificate or formal training in Diversity and Inclusion, Belonging, Change management or equivalent.
  • Experience with the following software: PeopleSoft, or other enterprise-wide HR or training systems, Saba Talent, OnBase, Box, SharePoint, One Drive, FASIS, Workforce, or Workday.
  • Advanced degree in human resources management, organizational development, applied behavioral sciences, strategic change management, business administration or related field.
  • Experience or familiarity working in a collective bargaining environment.
