About The Night Ministry The Night Ministry is a non-denominational, Chicago-based organization that provides human connection, housing support, and health care to those who are unhoused or experiencing poverty. With an open heart, we compassionately accept each individual as they are and work alongside them to advocate for their immediate physical, emotional, and social needs while affirming our shared humanity.

In 1976, a group of diverse congregations founded The Night Ministry to address the challenges facing the Lakeview and Lincoln Park neighborhoods. Our first employee, Reverend Tom Behrens, met with homeless and disenfranchised individuals at night when they were at their most vulnerable. Under his leadership, The Night Ministry grew from a one-person operation touching hundreds of lives to a 150-employee organization serving thousands of individuals each year. The Position

The Night Ministry is seeking an energetic, creative, and collaborative Director of People and Culture with exceptional judgment, interpersonal skills, and a desire to develop and grow a talented team, from attracting the best applicants to engaging employee advancement. As the Director, People & Culture, you will be responsible for:


Attract and Recruit Diverse Candidates

  • Build on The Night Ministry's (TNM) current recruitment and hiring processes to attract quality diverse employees at every level.
  • Define, create, and execute the communications strategy and branding for recruitment and talent acquisition, providing an exciting and accurate preview to candidates who are considering working at TNM.
  • Build and maintain processes and systems to track and communicate with candidates.
  • Ensure the effective onboarding of TNM Employees.
  • Implement and continually improve TNM's onboarding and new hire training process, making sure that employees feel welcomed, informed about their benefits, and prepared to excel in their roles.

Lead Culture-Building

  • Help define and create strategies for TNM's organizational culture goals, working to make TNM an employer of choice.
  • Lead the DEI and Racial Equity initiatives, in alignment with department goals, ensuring that TNM is an equitable and inclusive workplace where all employees feel valued and can thrive through training, coaching, and overall strategy and practice.

Develop Talent and Drive Performance

  • Continue to build and evolve TNM's talent development processes including organizational core competencies, goal setting, performance metrics, feedback, coaching, and semiannual reviews.
  • Lead all aspects of HR operations including professional development for individuals and teams, succession planning, employee relations, recruitment and retention, training, HRIS, payroll, and benefits administration

Administer Benefits and Ensure Compliance

    • Manage TNM's compliance with all labor and employment laws keeping current on changes in local, state, and federal law.
    • Ensure that personnel policies are aligned with agency values and applied consistently, accurately,andmeetTNM'sstandards, well those regulatory agencies and applicablestateandfederal
    • Support and train supervisors in the consistent application of personnel policies and applicable legal requirements. This includes the process of voluntary termination and ensures that termination procedures are according to The Night Ministry's policy and applicable laws. Ensure employees are supported through voluntary separations from employment.
    • Develop annual budget for human resources and administrative expenses; monitor expenses monthly; approve invoices promptly for payment.
    • Perform a bi-weekly review of the payroll register with the Finance team.
    • Guide the development and coordination of front office policies and procedures to ensure a welcoming visitor experience at all sites, through the supervision of the front office lead
    • Meet regularly with employees in supervisory meetings; timely completion of mid-year and annual performance appraisals; timely review and approval of semi-monthly timecards.
    • Serve as an internal consultant to manage/mediate conflict
    • Drive operational efficiencies of the open enrollment, including, but not limited to, evaluation, in conjunction with an insurance broker.
    • Ensure timely maintenance of personnel files, ensuring that files contain appropriate documentation required by law and regulatory agencies, such as the Department of Children & Family Services.
    • Ensure efficiency in HumanResourcesdata, including implementation of viable HRIS and online application processes.
    • Participateineducationalandprofessionalorganizations consistent with business
    • Ensure processing for claims and appeals, when necessary, is efficient, timely, and thorough, for worker's compensation, FMLA, and unemployment.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:


  • Bachelor'sdegreeinHumanResources, business administration,or related field required
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in human resources management required
  • Minimumof3-5yearssupervisoryexperience required
  • FamiliaritywithHRISsystemsandpayroll management
  • Fluent in change management strategies and best practice; proven success in implementing change across an organization
  • Experienced coaching employees and management through complex employee relations issues and making recommendations that are consistent with agency values, policies and procedures, and applicable Illinois and Federal labor statutes.
  • Demonstratedknowledgeofhumanresourcebestpracticesinrecruiting, benefits administration, employee relations, payroll, and policy development, preferably in a non-profit

Reporting to this position: HR Generalist, Talent Acquisition Specialist, Receptionist

According to The Night Ministry's policies, this position is expected to carry a cell phone and is eligible for partial reimbursement of monthly cell phone bills.
