ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE TEACHING PROFESSOR OF AGRICULTURAL AND BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING
Position: The Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a teaching faculty member to teach several courses and assume the role of Biological Engineering Undergraduate Program Coordinator. This non-tenure-track faculty position that will be filled at the Assistant or Associate Professor level (Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor) on a 48-week academic year appointment with 100% Teaching responsibilities. The assistant or associate Teaching Professor will be responsible for the instruction of several Biological Engineering undergraduate courses and will serve as the Biological Engineering undergraduate major coordinator. We seek an outstanding candidate with demonstrated interests, ability, and accomplishments in interacting and advising undergraduate students and helping them with their advising needs. Desired expertise needed includes demonstrated background and expertise (or desire to learn) in working very closely with undergraduate students. The faculty member will maintain high teaching and learning and education standards and contribute to our positive and engaging Penn State community, including synthesizing and incorporating technologies into teaching and learning programming in the classroom. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across Penn State's multi-campus system is required. Effective communication to provide creative leadership and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, industry, and numerous Penn State educational organizations [i.e., Leonard Center, Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) Group] is paramount. The ABET is an organization that accredits post-secondary education programs in applied and natural sciences, computing, engineering and engineering technology nationally and internationally. Demonstrated ability to function in a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary team environment is required. The person should have the capability to carry out an original, independent, innovative, and nationally visible teaching program and activities.
Responsibilities: Courses the candidate will teach include, but are not limited to: (i) BE 1-Seminar; BE 301-Mathematical Modeling of Biological and Physical Systems; BE 465- Food and Biological Process Engineering; and co-teach BE 460W-Biological Engineering Design I and BE 466W Biological Engineering Design II. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the role of Biological Engineering Program Coordinator includes meeting with prospective students as the BE Recruitment Events Coordinator; assigning students to faculty advisers; working with colleagues in the Engineering Advising Center; working with Leonhard Center for Enhancement of Engineering Education; being involved in the Undergraduate Studies Curricular Review Committee in College of Engineering; being involved in the Instruction and Curriculum Affairs Committee (ICAC) in the College of Agricultural Sciences; coordinate/organize the ABE Department's role in the Engineering New Student Orientation (NSO); recruitment; participating in ABET accreditation activities related to the BE major; serve in the College of Engineering ABET Coordination Group and other coordinator duties as assigned by the Department Head. As the BE undergraduate program coordinator, the successful faculty member will prepare the BE request for learning assistant (LA) funding support to submit to the Leonhard Center and coordinate/manage recruiting the undergraduate students.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in Agricultural/Biological Engineering or related discipline required. Successful candidate must have an engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program. This position requires excellent writing and oral communication skills. Successful candidate must have an effective and successful teaching background and an enthusiasm for interacting with students, both in the classroom and in advising and consultation meetings. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date.
The Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) Department: The mission of the ABE department is to promote global sustainability through the engineering science, business, and technical management of biological and agricultural systems. In addition to comprehensive transdisciplinary research, extension, and service activities in bioproducts, food, bioprocessing, natural resource engineering, and agricultural systems, the ABE department supports undergraduate and graduate resident education programs in: Biological Engineering (bachelor's), Agricultural and Biological Engineering (MS and Ph.D.), and BioRenewable Systems (BS, MS, and Ph.D.), and an interdisciplinary specialization in Environmental Resource Management.
