Assistant/Associate Professor, Fashion Merchandising

 

August 2024

 

POSITION:The Department of Design and Merchandising (DM) in the College of Education and Human Sciences at Oklahoma State University welcomes applications for tenure-track faculty positions of Assistant/Associate Professors in Fashion Merchandising beginning August 2024.

The Fashion Merchandising program at Oklahoma State believes in preparing our students for the fast pace of the fashion industry and advancing innovative research in retail merchandising. We combine traditional merchandising expertise with up to date digital and software applications, data analytics, global sourcing and more. We seek candidates who are deeply committed to teaching both undergraduate and graduate students, conducting impactful research, and actively engaging in service.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

        Teach two courses per semester in the area of Fashion Merchandising. (There is also the opportunity for summer teaching and leading study away courses.)

        Collaborate with fellow Fashion Merchandising faculty to conduct curriculum assessments, make necessary modifications to existing curricula, and develop new curricula that align with industry demands.

        Mentor undergraduate students and guide them in various student activities, including competitions, study abroad experiences, undergraduate research projects, and professional development opportunities.

        Serve as a graduate faculty member and mentor/advise graduate students by serving on thesis/dissertation committees. 

        Develop an independent and focused program of research scholarship, contributing to the academic field by publishing scholarly work in peer-reviewed journals/outlets.

        Actively seek external funding individually and/or through collaborative efforts.

        Provide service to the University, College of Education and Human Sciences, and the Department of Design and Merchandising faculty, staff and students.

        Develop partnerships with stakeholders at the community, state, national, and global levels to enhance the department's outreach and impact.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

       Hold a Ph.D. in Merchandising, Retailing, Consumer Behavior, or closely related field (ABD candidates with planned completion dates before the position's start date may also be considered); For the rank of Associate Professor, a minimum of 5 years full-time university teaching experience is required. 

       Demonstrate a commitment to working and engaging with all populations. 

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  •         Demonstrated ability to teach industry-relevant technologies relevant to Fashion Merchandising, such as Adobe Creative Cloud programs, Excel and other data management applications, visual merchandising/retailing software, and other emerging technologies like AR/VR or AI-related software.
  • Experience in course development and instruction delivered in alternative formats (e.g., lab-based, online/hybrid, varied duration, industry collaboration, outreach, study away).

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary will be commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications. (contingent on available funding)

 GENERAL INFORMATION:

Department of Design and Merchandising (DM): The Fashion Merchandising program in the department of Design and Merchandising (DM) is one of three major areas that also include Interior Design and Apparel Design and Technology. The department offers Bachelor of Science and Graduate degrees within all three areas. Over 300 students are currently enrolled in our growing department that is characterized by small class sizes, individualized instruction, fostering personal relationships with students and our alumni. Our faculty's goal is to ensure that our students receive ongoing mentorship outside the classroom to support career and life success.

 The department's two fashion-based majors are accredited by the Textile and Apparel Programs Accreditation Commission as of 2021. The Fashion Merchandising program is only one of 13 universities nationally in 2020 to receive affiliation recognition with the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA). 

 The department offers numerous laboratories (e.g., Gerber Technology Fashion Tech Design and Development Center, Textile and Apparel Science Lab, Mixed Reality Lab) and research equipment to support diverse research agendas or opportunities for professional development.

 Industry and Community Outreach: The faculty are supported by an industry advisory board made up of entrepreneurs and executives from major corporations. The department has strong partnerships with Wal-Mart, Target, and Dillard's among others. Numerous industry partners support our curricula by sponsoring course assignments or conducting guest lectures. Faculty are also committed to community engagement through connections to community organizations such as The Wings of Hope Women's Shelter, The United Way, The American Heart Association, 1 Million Cups Entrepreneur Events, and more.

 Student Engagement: Our students understand the importance of citizenship, servant leadership, volunteerism, and giving back to our communities through several of our department's student organizations including the American Association of Textile Colorists and Chemists (AATCC), International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA), Merchandising and Design Association (MADA), American Collegiate Retailing Association (ACRA). Our goal is to increase all of our graduates' global competencies by offering students several opportunities to study abroad/away each year.

Enrollment for the fall 2023 semester was 25,174, with 21,219 undergraduates and 4,686 graduate students.
