Purpose:
We are seeking an Assistant Technician in the area of Sustainable Manufacturing with expertise in using and maintaining manufacturing equipment. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience disassembling and reassembling equipment in the manufacturing industry or as a mechanic. They should be comfortable working across interdisciplinary teams of people with multiple areas of expertise. The candidate should be self-driven and have a vested interest in keeping their equipment running. The candidate will be expected to simultaneously execute multiple projects, manage their time, and interact with ORNL staff, industry, and academic partners. This position resides in the Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies Group in the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD) of the Energy Science and Technology Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This position will be temporary, but could extends beyond two years depending on funding availability.
Overview:
Our research team carries out high quality R&D focused on the Sustainable Manufacturing for applications in aerospace, automotive, and marine/shipbuilding industries, as well as trending areas of international composite research in material science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and automation. As part of our research team, the candidate will play a key role in running and maintaining one-of-a-kind equipment in the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF). The candidate must have experience executing on procedures developed for equipment, managing their and the equipment’s time, and should be able to safely use equipment.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Use and maintain new, one-of-a-kind equipment
- Make mechanical modifications and customization of existing machinery
- Manage multiple technical projects and meet milestones reliably
- Help to support team goals and work with other team members
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
- Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:
- High School diploma and at least 3 years of relevant industrial experience
- Experience with maintaining and operating heavy industrial machinery through reading of manuals and interacting with a company’s technical assistance lines
- Experience with assembly and disassembly of complex machinery such as cars, farm equipment, construction equipment, equipment in factories, etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and frequently interacting teams of researchers
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
- Experience with building and modifying/customizing complex machinery
- Experience with reading engineering drawings
- Experience with Solidworks or other CAD software
- Experience with CAM software and G-Code
