Job Summary: This leadership position will function to assist in managing and maintaining the day-to-day activities of all Laboratory and Hospital Services Operations, including staff assets. The Assistant Technical Director will need to use their knowledge, skills, and experience to ensure all quality control mechanisms are in compliance with Laboratory and Hospital Services, blood bank standard operation procedures (SOPs), Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), California Department of Public Health, and Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB) regulations and standards. Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment. This leadership position will collaborate with other manufacturing departments to ensure excellence in supplying and distributing safe blood products with the utmost quality and fiscal integrity.
Essential Job Duties:
(70% of time overseeing daily technical and quality assurance of Laboratory and Hospital Services operations)
(30% of time dedicated to validation planning and execution, review, assisting with draft standard operating procedures, and training for all Laboratory and Hospital Services operations)
Duties include:
- Work closely with Lab Manager to complete monthly reports and support staff.
- Keep abreast of industry best practices and regulatory guidance
- Assist research and selection of new laboratory equipment
- Collaborate with all internal departments in process improvement
- Become a technical subject matter expert in Blood Establishment Computer Software (BECS) and other technologies and quality control. Maintain compliance excellence in blood bank SOPs, FDA, State of California and AABB standards for Laboratory and Hospital Services
- Ability to respond to inquires or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
- Review of staff work, PM schedules, and evaluation of staff competencies and maintain excellence in proficiency testing programs
- Monitors and assures staff compliance to SOPs, FDA, State of California and AABB standards; takes appropriate corrective action or reports problems.
- Assist with oversite for all reactive donor testing including donor notification and lookbacks
- Reviews QC monthly and recognizes factors that contribute to any variance, makes judgments concerning variance, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision. Assures proper calibration and correlations of necessary laboratory equipment
- Participates in the selection of new Clinical Laboratory Scientists, Testing Techs, and Component Techs
- Helps evaluate new techniques and procedures in terms of space and personnel requirements, method comparison, cost analysis, and the establishment of reference intervals; writes and revises technical procedures.
- Serve as key point person/expert for IRL staff including assistance in difficult donor or patient work-up. Review of IRL patient workups for accuracy and completeness.
- Monitor all aspects of Laboratory Operations for areas of Increased Efficiency and Process Improvements
- Recognizing customers' needs and respond above and beyond customer expectations
- Assist in creating a culture of teamwork by bringing experience in effective servant leadership while mentoring managers and supervisors in problem-solving skills. Lead by example.
- Assumes duties in the absence of the Technical Laboratory Director, giving direction and guidance to support personnel in all Testing, Components, and Hospital Services Operations.
- On-site attendance is an essential requirement of this position.

Requirements
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor of Science degree (B.S) in medical technology or related science with completion of an accredited Clinical Laboratory (hospital-based) program.
- Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, excluding boosters.
- Possess and maintain current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) licensure, certified SBB/BB or equivalent preferred
- A minimum 5 years' experience in Blood Bank/Transfusion Services, with experience and expertise in immunohematology science, blood component preparation and/or blood donor testing
- A minimum of 3 years' experience in leadership, training, and/or management roles.
- Component preparation and/or donor testing experience preferred.
- Exceptional communication skills both oral and written, motivationally effective with collaborative outcomes, including experience in conflict resolution management
- Requires high attention to detail and the ability to multi-task and adapt rapidly to changing priorities and tasks
