Apply Now Job Description Amherst Recreation Assistant Sports Director/Program Coordinator Job Summary Provides year round coordination, supervision, and program planning for the effective and safe operation of the Department's various youth and adult programs. This position includes frequent evening and weekend work and involves some irregular hours.
Supervision Received Works under the general supervision of the Amherst Recreation Sports Director who provides direction and guidance, outlines departmental policies, areas of responsibility and procedures, and evaluates employee performance. Alerts supervisor to unusual or serious program problems and policy issues. Supervision Exercised Provides direct supervision and assists with the recruiting, hiring and training of numerous seasonal staff and volunteers for the various youth and adult sports and recreation programs.
Provides mid-season and end of season staff performance evaluations. Major Duties 1. Facilitates the coordination and program planning of an array of recreational and competitive activities including, but not limited to: Youth Rec Basketball; Youth Suburban Basketball; Youth Football; Adult Volleyball; Adult Softball; and various tournaments and recreational activities.
2. Provides initial interaction in resolving difficult issues with staff, children, parents, host facility etc. Keeps Director apprised of circumstances and enlists support.
3. Fosters an atmosphere of inclusion, cooperation and support within a diverse population of staff, volunteers, participants and parents for all programs. 4.
Provides opportunities for professional staff growth and development. Integrates special needs staff into the "team" even if they have supervision and pay from another source. 5.
Maintains high standards of safety, and assures compliance with department goals. Assures compliance with state and federal childcare regulations. Maintains all applicable staff and children's files.
6. Assists with the preparation of yearly youth program budgets. 7.
Reviews and submits staff payroll hours in a timely manner. 8. Assesses needs and recommends major program purchases.
Keeps programs stocked with daily supplies. Retains records, initiates procedures for paying of program's bills. 9.
Assists with the marketing and promotion of all youth and adult sports and recreation programs. 10. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelors degree in recreation, education or related field, plus two years of experience in youth and sports programs is preferred; or any combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, or abilities necessary for the position. Technical knowledge of childcare regulations, recreational program planning and strong organizational skills are required for this position as well as solid communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to develop and establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, the participants, parents and the general public.
An understanding of sports programming and recreational philosophy is important. The ability to plan and supervise the work of paid staff and volunteers is essential. Basic computer skills or willingness to learn also required.
Must be able to pass CORI/SORI and able to meet all OFC regulations for working with children. Tools and Equipment Used Personal computer, including word processing software; calculator; copy and fax machine; phone; mobile or portable radio; automobile; various games and sports equipment used in sports and recreation programs.
