Organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco's homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.
Program: Compass Family Shelter provides homeless families with a safe place to stay. Each family has their own room, and access to a kitchen, children's play area, and other communal spaces. While families are at shelter, they receive intensive support from our team. We help them stabilize, find housing, and address challenges that contributed to their homelessness.
Schedule: Full time, Sunday through Thursday, with Fri/Sat off
Location: 626 Polk St., San Francisco. Full in person for first three months, then option to work remotely one day per week
Salary range: $66,000 - $71,000 annually

Responsibilities:
The Assistant Program Director works with the Program Director to oversee the day to day operations of Compass Family Shelter. This includes supervising staff, designing and implementing programs, building and managing relationships with partners, providing direct support to clients, and completing administrative responsibilities. The ideal candidate is willing to work onsite to create and maintain and warm and supportive shelter community and support the needs of shelter clients and shelter staff. Specific duties include the following:
- Supervise Residential Counselors and janitorial staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, professional development, and performance evaluation.
- Coordinate the program's intake and exit processes and ensure timely and efficient turnover of units.
- Manage referrals from SF Coordinated Entry, including scheduling intakes, coordinating with appropriate staff, and communicating with Access Points
- Manage the shelter program in the absence of the Program Director.
- Implement program policies equitably; de-escalate and appropriately follow-up with clients when direct reports need further assistance.
- Co-facilitate staff meetings with Program Director, and clinical meetings with the support of agency Clinical Director.
- Support Residential Counselors to facilitate weekly community meetings.
- Collaborate with the Program Director to identify areas for staff development and training.
- Maintain compliance with San Francisco's Uniform Grievance Procedure for city-funded shelters.
- Facilitate all HSH program-related grievances and related reporting.
- Strengthen partnership and effective communication with Tenderloin Housing Clinic; facilitate meetings with THC Property Management and Compass Operations Manager to identify and troubleshoot room repairs and other concerns.
- Work with the Program Director to design and implement programs/strategies and evaluate program effectiveness across all offerings.
- Maintain attendance and vacation schedules of direct reports and provide or assign coverage during staff absences.
- Work with the Program Director to continuously coach staff to provide trauma-informed case management and supportive services.
- When necessary, provide case management to a small case load of families.
- Actively participate in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) work within the agency/manage program with a lens on DEIB
- As needed, support the Children's Activities Coordinator with children's program development and outreach activities, shifting programming to align with the ever-changing demographics and current family needs.
Qualifications:
- Experience working in a residential setting required
- Candidates who speak fluent Spanish especially encouraged to apply
- Minimum 3 years relevant experience in social work or a related field
- Experience working with families in crisis
- Understanding of and ability to implement trauma-informed practices
- Strong interpersonal, listening and communication skills
- Outstanding work habits: punctual, reliable, cooperative, team-oriented
- Ability to work independently as well as to inspire and lead a committed team
- Strong written and organizational skills
- Strong competence in standard computer programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Google drive, Zoom). Salesforce and other database experience a plus.

Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary range: $66,000 - $71,000 annually.
- Paid time off: just under 4 weeks of vacation your first year, just under 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave, time off for education.
- Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.
- Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-5
Location & Covid Considerations:
- Work location: 626 Polk St., in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco
- After their first 90 days, staff have the option to work from home one day per week.
- Covid vaccination required for all staff
