Job description

The Department of English at Utah State University Tooele seeks applications for an academic-year, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of English in Composition Studies, with a specialization in first-year composition. Experience teaching professional communication at the lower-division level is strongly preferred. Additional areas of specialization within first-year composition can include multimodal and/or digital writing, translingualism, transformative pedagogies, or other areas of expertise related to the position. USU Tooele is part of USU’s Statewide community of campuses, and candidates should be experts in pedagogies that support the learning, recruitment, and retention of a wide variety of students, including non-traditional students, first-generation students, students of color, students with disabilities, and students from rural backgrounds. We also welcome applications from candidates who have teaching and research interests in fields with direct demographic and geographic connections to USU Tooele and other Statewide locations, including interests in Latinx studies, Indigenous studies, Southwest border studies, environmental humanities, Land/Water/Air initiatives, and rural-urban studies. The candidate will join a department committed to transformative pedagogies and equal opportunities for all students.

The applicant is required to have a PhD in Rhetoric & Composition or a related field, a strong teaching record, and potential for publication. This is a teaching-centered position with a teaching load of three courses per semester (3/3); the candidate will be expected to teach courses to Statewide students primarily via the Connect synchronous course delivery format, which provides simultaneous in-person instruction for Tooele students and synchronous virtual instruction for all other Statewide and Logan students. The candidate will also engage in research as their secondary area. Candidates publishing in a variety of genres, from academic research to public humanities to creative nonfiction, will be encouraged to apply. Teaching will be based on the Tooele campus, approximately 30 miles from downtown Salt Lake City. The position begins in August 2024.

The successful applicant will contribute to the department in the following ways:

  • Teach at least four CL1 and CL2 (general education) composition courses a year to Tooele and Statewide students, meeting strong continuing demand in this area of the department’s undergraduate curriculum. These courses include ENGL 2020: Professional Communication, ENGL 2010: Research and Argument Across Perspectives, and ENGL 1010: Writing as Inquiry.
  • Provide students with mentoring and educational opportunities to develop transferable workforce skills for a variety of careers and professions.
  • Strengthen the structure and support the development of the composition program.
  • Teach courses in additional areas of the department’s undergraduate curriculum, based upon department need and the successful candidate’s interests and expertise.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have earned a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition or a related field and must have fulfilled their degree requirements by August 1, 2024.
  • Must have a proven record of effective and innovative teaching of first-year composition.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in teaching professional communication courses at the general education level.
  • Demonstrate potential for research in the discipline.

Along with the online application, please attach:

  1. CV to be uploaded at the beginning of your application in the Candidate Profile under “Resume/CV".
  2. Name and contact information for 3 professional references to be entered into Candidate Profile.
  3. Cover letter to be typed/pasted at the end of your application.

Candidates advancing to the next round will be asked to provide a philosophy of teaching, a writing sample, and three letters of recommendation.
