The teaching load is two courses (or the equivalent of 6 credit hours) per semester, and the successful candidate may teach undergraduate and graduate courses in dance histories, dance studies, dance education, dance techniques, and/or other studio practices, as well as serve on graduate thesis committees. Terminal degree required, doctoral degree preferred.
About the School of Dance
Dance at the University of Utah has a rich history and ongoing legacy. One of the first US universities to offer degrees in dance, the U (as it is known colloquially) has one of the largest and longest-standing dance programs in the country. We have evolved into a vibrant, innovative, and forward-thinking School of Dance accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance and celebrate nine decades of successful alumni. We are an incubator for dance education and artistic exploration, a community in which renowned faculty connect individually with students, nurturing young artists and cultivating an environment that fosters personal and artistic growth. We offer unique and plentiful performance opportunities, a range of scholarly and creative inquiry, rigorous and challenging coursework, and interdisciplinary explorations.
The School of Dance has committed itself to viewpoint diversity, academic freedom, open inquiry, and removing barriers that individuals from underrepresented groups have traditionally encountered. We strive to recruit faculty who will further enhance our diversity, and we make every attempt to support their academic, professional, and personal success while they are here.
Our curriculum possesses both breadth and depth, offering coursework in anatomy, choreography, dance education, dance studies, history, music, pedagogy, screendance, somatics, and various dance techniques. Comprehensive programs of study maintain a balanced emphasis on both performance and scholarship in a professional and inclusive atmosphere.
Admission is competitive, and our student body is comprised of approximately 200 undergraduates and 15 graduate students seeking professional quality dance training and meaningful educational experiences in the following degree programs: BFA in Ballet, BFA in Modern Dance, BFA in Ballet with Teaching Emphasis, BFA in Modern Dance Teaching, Certificate in Ballet Studio Teaching, Minor in Modern Dance, MFA in Ballet, MFA in Modern Dance, and a graduate Certificate in Screendance.
The School of Dance is housed in the beautiful Marriott Center for Dance, a state-of-the-art facility that includes a 333-seat professional fully staffed theatre and costume shop, a black box theatre space, six large dance studios, a private faculty studio, and a conditioning room with an on-site athletic trainer. Additional information about The School of Dance can be found at dance.utah.edu.
