We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.
REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3+ years of theatrical production management or supervision experience. Knowledge of standard theatrical and event practices, equipment, and software in all areas of theater/dance production (stage operations, lighting, sound, rigging, and video/projection).
  • Strong organizational, communication and scheduling skills, with an attentiveness to detail.

  • Ability to respond to changing circumstances quickly and with a positive attitude.
  • Precise record keeping skills.
  • Working knowledge of computers, Mac and PC.
    • Proficiency with Vectorworks and Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) are a must.

The Assistant Production Manager reports to the Director of Production.
This description reflects management's assignment of essential functions, it does not proscribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned.
GENERAL DUTIES INCLUDE:
  • Overseeing onstage operations and managing full-time (IATSE) and part-time/over-hire stage crew in conjunction with the Director of Production and the Lighting Supervisor.
  • Assisting the Director of Production in gathering production information and requirements from incoming companies, as well as determining how to facilitate their needs.
  • Assisting the Director of Production with determining the appropriate number of crew needed for work calls during engagements and maintenance.
  • Sending work offers to part-time/over-hire crew for work calls and coverage needs as specified by the Director of Production.
  • Coaching and developing staff members and over-hires by monitoring the quality of employees' work and providing constructive feedback.
  • Sharing performance supervision responsibilities with the Lighting Supervisor.
  • Distributing pertinent technical information of the resident (or incoming) company to the crew.
  • Attending production meetings, staff meetings, and other meetings as needed.

RECORD-KEEPING DUTIES INCLUDE:
  • Creating and maintaining accurate show records, company files, house crew files, and over-hire call list.
  • Maintaining, and creating as needed, accurate inventories of all stage equipment and supplies, and advising the Director of Production of purchase and repair needs.
  • Maintaining accurate specifications of the theater/stage.

REMARKS:
Due to the theater's extremely busy schedule (typically 48 performance weeks per season, averaging 38-42 engagements/companies per season), the Assistant Production Manager must be able to work quickly and efficiently to serve the needs of visiting companies in a polite and helpful manner. The daily working schedule involves long hours and may be inconsistent from week to week (it includes nights, weekends, and holidays). The Assistant Production Manager must always ensure that the work onstage is done in the safest environment possible and to the high standards of The Joyce Theater. The Assistant Production Manager will work with the Director of Production, Lighting Supervisor, Director of Operations, and Facilities Manager to ensure the proper upkeep of the backstage area. In the absence of the Director of Production, the Assistant Production Manager and Lighting Supervisor will be fully responsible for the smooth running of the production department.

About The Joyce Theater Foundation
The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired, and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther's clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for more than 400 U.S.-based and international dance companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn's Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces, such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st-12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce's annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences in excess of 100,000 patrons. Visit Joyce.org for more information.
Joyce Theater Foundation employees share a rich work experience with colleagues who embrace the institution's mission of programming and promoting a wide spectrum of dance.
