Job Description
The Assistant News Editor helps oversee the multiplatform team and the daily production of the print edition, including leading the daily news meeting, making daily assignments, adjusting schedules, and coaching and mentoring coworkers.
This is a supervisory position, and this manager should be dedicated to the growth and development of staffers and to company DEI efforts.
The Assistant News Editor will assist with posting stories and other content to our website, and ensure the e-edition is properly updated and prepared for the next morning's publication. The Assistant News Editor will also edit stories, photo captions and graphics, write headlines, and assess and improve a story's presentation for online and in print.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
- Leads news meetings, conducts yearly evaluations, meets regularly with direct reports, offers suggestions to improve headlines and presentations.
- Consistently posts to our website and helps prepare the e-edition at the end of the night.
- Offers feedback and coaching to direct reports and multiplatform team as a whole.
- Directs workflow to ensure internal deadlines are met in order to meet the nightly final deadline, including troubleshooting any issues that could prevent the desk from making its deadlines.
- Takes part in interviewing and hiring of multiplatform desk candidates.
- Helps train new desk hires and interns.
- Actively participates in nightly Page 1 check-in, weekly management meetings, daily news meeting, brainstorming sessions, job interviews, training sessions.
- Edits copy, writes headlines and captions, edits graphics and photos, and slots copy.
- Leads desk in News Editor's absence.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor's degree in Journalism or a related field; additional experience in lieu of education will be considered.
Experience as Assistant News Editor: A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a newsroom is required. At least 2 years of supervising or directing a team is preferred. Senior editors may also occasionally be in a position of authority as night News Editors.
Skills:
- Sound news judgment, grammatical precision, energy, curiosity and an appreciation for providing the best local coverage with impact and excitement.
- Confidence to lead direct reports and assist in leading the team as a whole.
- Ability to work remotely with little hand-holding but can work in the office when called upon.
- Versatility and quickness.
