Description
Under the general direction of the Public Communications Director, the Assistant Public Communications Director assists with media and public relations, crisis and emergency communications, internal communications, and marketing. The position promotes city plans and goals through strategic communication to various internal and external audiences regarding city projects, programs, and issues. Work requires limited supervision and the use of independent judgment and discretion. The Assistant Public Communications Director may act on behalf of the director in his/her absence, or when needed.
Principal Duties
+ Assist the Public Communications Director with managing the Public Communications’ department to include but not limited to, participating in the development of the department’s work plan, projects, and programs; monitoring workflow; reviewing and evaluating work products, methods, and procedures; participating in the development, planning, and implementation of departmental goals and objectives; and recommending, implementing, and administering department policies and procedures.
+ Participate in media relations activities, including responding to routine inquiries, drafting, editing, and distributing news releases, serving as back-up to the Public Communications Director; alerting the media of photo/video opportunities; identifying and communicating newsworthy stories; forecasting necessary issue-related media strategies; working on-call during emergencies; and/or, performing related activities.
+ Oversee, manage, and supervise assigned staff engaged in broadcast and video production-related activities including directing and assigning work; counseling and conducting performance evaluations; and performing disciplinary procedures as necessary.
+ Develop and produce creative content for various printed and digital communications, including overseeing the city’s external and internal blogs; writing copy for print, web, and television; designing, editing, and overseeing the production of collateral materials; attending project or community meetings to maintain relations; and/or performing related activities.
+ Plan, facilitate, and review public education campaigns for city departments, elections, and council initiatives; develop creative ideas and proposals for presentation to applicable departments.
+ Participate in the planning, coordination, execution, and evaluation of special events for targeted audiences; assist on event committees, as needed.
+ Participate in various meetings, committees, teams, or related groups to provide advice and guidance regarding communications opportunities and options; meet with community stakeholders, as needed.
+ Help measure the effectiveness of media, social media, and other communication/marketing efforts to determine future needs.
+ Perform other duties as assigned, including but not limited to assist with managing the department’s budget.
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, or related field, and five (5) years of experience in media and/or media relations with two (2) years of progressive supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent writing, verbal and presentation skills. Excellent understanding of strategic use of social media.
Preferred:
Knowledge of municipal government operations. Photography and photo editing skills. Graphic design experience with Adobe Creative Suite. Project management experience.
