Charged with shaping the environment and experiences of students living on campus, this role oversees services and programs which focus on learning outcomes connected to personal development, and community impact. The Assistant Director of Residence Life is responsible for providing guidance, direction, and support for the overall mission, vision, and goals of the Residence Life program at the University of Oklahoma. Reports to the Director of Residence Life.
Functional Area Assignment: The Assistant Director of Residence Life will be assigned to one of the following functional areas. Assignments and duties may change as departmental needs develop. Residence Education // Conduct, Crisis & Care // Recruitment, Training, and Development.
Residence Education:
- Oversee the development and implementation of Student Affair’s Divisional Curriculum for Residence Life
- Create diverse strategies to engage students in co-curricular learning
- Assess curricular efforts and student learning within the residence halls
- Serves as the lead advisor for the Housing Center Student Association, National Residence Hall Honorary, and Community Councils
Conduct, Crisis, and Care:
- Assisting in the implementation of the Residence Life Conduct process through collaboration with the Office of Student Conduct
- Reviews incident reports, assigns cases, and serves as a hearing officer for high level incidents
- Provides assistance and support to Residence Life case manager and students of concern
- Assess and implement crisis response protocols
- Oversee the development of prevention programming efforts
Recruitment, Training, and Development:
- Strategically designs and implements all training initiatives for the department
- Oversees all recruitment efforts for student and staff positions
- Creates intentional year-round development opportunities for staff
Additional duties include but are not limited to:
Operations & Administration:
- Overseeing the day-to-day Residence Life functions and partner with cross-functional colleagues to ensure a positive student experience.
- Ensuring quality student services and programs that support the mission and goals of OU Housing and Residence Life and the Division of Student Affairs.
- Serve as an advisor for departmental committees.
- Under the general direction of the Director of Residence Life, the Assistant Director of Residence Life is expected to exercise a high level of independent judgment in the conduct of business responsibility with minimal supervision.
- Management, facilitation and evaluation of Residential Curriculum as well as participation in Divisional Curriculum efforts.
- Assuming a proactive role in enhancing the student experience by personally resolving complex or sensitive concerns, questions, and requests, and addressing chronic resident noncompliance with community policies with appropriate university resources as applicable.
- Supervise assessment activities.
- Administrative duties including policy and budget.
- Providing on-call/emergency support.
Supervisory and Management Duties:
- Creating accountability and ownership among team members; communicating clear expectations, supervising, and providing timely performance feedback.
- Assisting with the hiring, training, and on-going development and assessment of Residence Life Coordinators and Graduate Assistants. Direct leadership, supervision, and management of professional/paraprofessional staff teams and student employees.
- Oversee, coordinate, and evaluate Graduate and Professional Staff Training.
Strategy Planning:
- Collaborating as a member of the departmental leadership team on goal setting, strategic planning, assessment, evaluation, and policy development.
- Will execute creative strategic initiatives that will have a measurable impact on student retention.
- Will be responsible for assisting in communication initiatives to residents and families, as directed.
- Reporting on all relevant Residence Life metrics. Creating and monitoring committee projects and providing assessment reports and/or documentation for each project assigned.
- To implement, coordinate, manage, and evaluate multiple projects over varied time periods.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Location
Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree, AND:
- 36 months related experience
Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 84 months related experience.

Valid Driver's License: Employees who drive any university vehicle or their own personal vehicle while performing an assigned duty by his/her supervisor must have a valid driver's license. It is the employee's responsibility to tell his/her supervisor if the license is invalid, or that you do not have one, and explain they cannot drive.
Department Preferences:
- Master's Degree in Adult and Higher Education, Human Resources, Social Work, or related
- Progressive experience in Residence Life development/management/supervision
- 36-60 months of professional experience in Residence Life or student housing operations management
- 12 or more months experience supervising full-time staff, training, developing staff, and assessing educational programs
- Knowledge of Roompact, StarRez and Maxient software, or similar tools, preferred
- Experience adjudicating alleged violations of University policy
- Demonstrated knowledge of student success strategies
Supervision: Will report directly to the Director of Residence Life, and will supervise full-time staff, may oversee a staff of graduate and undergraduate student employees.
