About UMOM New Day Centers: Founded in 1964, UMOM is Arizona's largest provider of services for families experiencing homelessness. Our mission is to restore hope, rebuild lives, and end homelessness. With an annual operating budget of $22 million dollars, UMOM provides shelter, supportive services, and housing programs to families and single women experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County. UMOM serves over 15,000 unique individuals across all our services annually, including families receiving support at the Family Housing Hub.
Position Description: The Assistant Director of Logistics provides high-level leadership and management of the purchasing, receiving, distribution, warehouse operations, and overall logistics of the organization in alignment with UMOM's strategic direction. Serves as a key role in leading the development of distribution strategies, optimization of the multi-channel network, managing of day-to-day DC Operations, and driving of improved experience and service levels to our donors & clients. Directs the ongoing operations of a new multi-facility distribution point system along with developing new processes & systems to maximize efficiency, effectiveness, and consistency related to logistics. The Assistant Director will work directly with UMOM's leadership team to collaborate and coordinate on all logistical needs associated with organizational events, client move outs, and to align the strategic direction of the team with UMOM's vision and goals. This role will also be a key partner in developing and implementing a hands-on training curriculum for UMOM clients, similar to our Homegrown program.
This is a leadership and hands-on position, and requires experience with people and project management, financial planning, and understanding of Logistics. The Director is expected to uphold a client & customer service focus, with understanding of the 24/7 nature of UMOM's work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Strategy & Operations
- Builds and implements strategy and logistics plan to ensure the long-term sustainability of UMOM's logistic needs. Specific duties include leadership of inventory control systems, procurement, client request delivery system, and a customer & client centered donation center.
- Creates, trains on, and enforces standard operating procedures related to logistics operations.
- Establishes and maintains relationships with vendors, carriers, individual donors, volunteers, community corporate supporters, organizations, and churches related to in-kind donations.
- Forecasts inventory needs for in-kind donations on behalf of clients, team members, and departments to ensure no disruption in operations as a result of supply management.
- Coordinates with other departments to provide support for events, including materials & supplies, storage, transportation, and set-up/tear-down.
- Works with the facilities team to ensure fleet preventative maintenance is scheduled appropriately.
- Analyzes, prepares, and presents insightful logistics information for leadership in support of strategic planning and decision-making, including short- and long-term logistics priorities, needs, and resources.

- Supervises the logistics team, including training, direction of work, appraisal of productivity and efficiency, delivery of feedback and coaching, and disciplinary action, if necessary.
Logistics Leadership & Evaluation
- Leads accountability initiatives for logistics operations, including the in-kind donor experience, client move-outs, % of needed items donated vs. purchased, client/CM request fulfillment rate & timeliness, and cost savings associated with in-kind operations. Ensures effective systems are in place for managing this work. Implements logistics and inventory management functionality.
- Operationalizes and evaluates ongoing iterative updates to an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to track inventory and usage as well as train other departments to utilize the ERP system.
- Cultivates and maintains systems and documentation to track all logistics-related information.
- Promotes a data driven and outcomes-based culture within logistics team. Oversees tracking and collection of multiple measures of performance to consistently demonstrate effectiveness and efficiency.
Safety & Compliance
- Encourages and enhances a culture of safety and risk mitigation at UMOM facilities, providing training and instruction on best practices as needed.
- Upholds and follows all federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, and policies; where necessary, drafts additional UMOM safety policies related to logistics operations.
Qualifications and Competency Requirements:
Experience and Education
- Minimum five years of professional experience, with at least three years of experience in relevant roles (e.g. senior level leadership in logistics, warehouse management, and/or other comparable positions)
- Minimum of two years of professional management experience
- Bachelor's degree or formal certification or ten years of experience in relevant roles required
- Bilingual in Spanish is strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a department level vision and/or strategic plan, including successful change management at a department and/or multi-department level
Computer Skills
- Proficiency with applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook
- Previous experience with inventory control and logistics systems is strongly preferred
Compliance- This is a safety-sensitive position.
- Pass all required background checks and drug screening.
- Possess a valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card or the ability to obtain and maintain one
- Valid AZ Driver's License and a driving record that falls within UMOM's policy
- 50/100 level of car insurance coverage (mileage reimbursement available)

- This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, and reaching all day. The employee must frequently lift and carry items over 50 pounds. The duties of this job require regular exposure to outside weather conditions.

Work Schedule: The typical schedule for this position is Monday-Friday, normal business hours, with occasional nights and weekends, depending on the needs of the position and the organization.
