Job Title: Assistant Director of Student Development

Work Schedule: M-F, 12-month
Grade: 6
Salary Range: $50,000 - $60,000
General purpose: Responsible for oversight of Student Affairs' non-clinical student case management program, inclusive of working directly with students, maintaining comprehensive databases/records, and coordinating support systems for Students of concern.
Summary of Essential Functions:

  • This position coordinates the Student Affairs process for addressing the needs of students who have challenges by providing appropriate interventions, referrals and follow-up services. This position serves as a liaison to students requiring interventions and/or who are in need of additional resources to succeed. The position also collects, reviews, coordinates and manages the at-risk student cases that come to the Student Affairs Office.
  • This is a critical and complex role which blends the functions of individual student consultation, program coordination of student referrals and intake, maintenance of student cases, and problem-solving/advocacy in addressing factors which contribute to student retention and improve student academic success.
  • The Assistant Director serves as a key student retention agent by coordinating comprehensive internal support structures for Students experiencing academic and/or health challenges and working with students on medical or related leave of absences to ensure appropriate pathways to return to the College.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Supervises the Coordinator for Student Development, inclusive of hiring and training; Assigns student cases to the Coordinator.
  • Supervises Student Affairs' work study students, inclusive of all hiring and training responsibilities
  • Monitor & manage a student caseload related to recommended or required courses of action compliance; Meet with students to address individual concerns affecting academic performance and class attendance, providing short-term support to students and/or making referrals as appropriate
  • Process Medical Withdrawals and assist with negotiation between students and faculty on extended illness and other legitimate absences that may lead to assignment extensions and Incomplete Contracts
  • Establish clear, user-friendly processes for Students returning from medical leave of absences/withdrawals in order to facilitate the appropriate return of students to enrollment and ultimately the completion of their degrees
  • Write the Student Development annual report on student data and utilization
  • Respond to daily email and telephone inquiries from Students, Parents, Faculty and Staff regarding student problems
  • Work with academic advisors to ensure that students are utilizing academic support programs and services to ensure academic success
  • Work closely with the MICA Student Counseling Center and Student Health Center in support of the physical, academic, and psychological needs of students through individual and community-based interventions
  • Work closely with the Office of Accessibility and Disability Services coordinating support for Students who may need temporary adjustments due to a short-term injury or illness.
  • Assist students with navigating the College's Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP) and respond to inquiries regarding the health program
  • Problem solve and advise students who are having financial difficulty in collaboration with Financial Aid and Student Accounts
  • Participate in hospital follow-up and discharge meetings if indicated
  • In partnership with the Associate Vice President of Student Health and Well-Being, coordinate campus wide efforts to address student-based food insecurity.
  • Support students with Title IX complaints providing appropriate guidance and resources.
  • Serve as an institutional conduct officer, hearing student disciplinary cases, with a primary focus on non-residential incidents
  • In partnership with the Associate Vice President of Student Health and Well-Being, maintain and initiate on-going relationships with community partners, services, hospitals, and other resources
  • Participate and/or lead institutional retention committees and assist with the determination of students who are in need of case management
  • Serve in the on-call duty rotation to provide emergency back-up to Residence Life, Student Counseling, Campus Safety, and others during campus crises.
  • Serve as a liaison to other divisional areas of the College as needed. Lead and serve on campus committees, research trends, and perform project work assigned by the Associate Vice President of Student Health and Well-Being on an on-going basis.
  • Participate in the Student Affairs on-call rotation for on-campus emergencies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to advocate for Student success
  • Ability to multi-task and manage a large and diverse caseload
  • Ability to work well with a diverse range of constituents (staff, faculty, students, parents, and off campus providers)
  • Acute attention to detail
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Strong skills in understanding Student Development theory and behavior management
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in supporting and serving a diverse student community.
  • Ability to work well with college students demonstrating trust and empathy in a complexity of situations

Minimum qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in higher education, counselor education, psychology, sociology, public health or related field is required
  • Three years of experience in higher education, primarily working with student populations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent skills in collaboration and interpersonal relationship development

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in psychology, sociology social work, counseling or related field
  • Demonstrated experience in working with distressed student populations
  • Experience in higher education emergency response, particularly related to student behavior
  • Broad knowledge of mental health care and services, crisis management/prevention, suicidal assessment, educational outreach to students, staff, faculty, and parents/guardians
  • Experience collaborating and interacting with multiple organizations and agencies
  • Understanding of the needs of student artists

  • Work environment: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
  • Required training: Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment. (additional training may be added, SEE: EHS Manager training schedule)
