SCOPE OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Lead Cook, prepare all items needed for meals, assist in prepping items for meals in advance, and use proper cleaning procedures following all food safety standards.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum High School Graduate or equivalent required.
  • Hold a current Oregon Food Handlers Certification.
  • 1 year of experience in cooking / food management for large groups.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REOUIRED:
  • Desire to work with all age groups served by the site.
  • Ability to communicate well with others from diverse backgrounds, ages, and nationalities.
  • Ability to work in groups.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards at all times.
  • Enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and be comfortable working with a high degree of independence.
  • Ability to make independent decisions that may involve unique or unusual situations and/or complex issues and dealing with demanding requests or timelines.
  • Good character, integrity, and adaptability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist Lead Cook in maintaining organization and cleanliness using proper cleaning and sanitizing procedures in all areas of the kitchen, dining hall, rest rooms, pantry, laundry room, and outside the dining hall facility.
  • Assist the Lead Cook in planning and preparing meals, running inventory, accepting deliveries, rotating, and labeling stock items, and possibly placing food orders.
  • Prepare meals as scheduled without the presence of the Lead Cook.
  • Properly cool, label, and store all leftovers and open food items.
  • Assist in the dish area as needed.
  • Follow all Oregon food codes and regulations, preparing hot, fresh, and safe food at all times.
  • Ensure all kitchen opening and closing tasks are performed, and that all equipment is properly shut down after use. General Duties:
  • Show respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff and guests. ' Adhere to The Salvation Army policies and procedures. Perform any other duties as assigned by the Lead Cook.

PHYSICAL REOUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, hike, and twist on a continuous basis for up to 15-20 minutes at a time.
  • Ability to grasp, push, and pull objects, such as files, file cabinets drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Physical ability to respond to a variety of situations; must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • There may be phone and in-person contact with others from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated.
  • May be required to work in all areas of camp including, but not limited to, the kitchen, dish room, laundry facility and grounds.
  • Working in a distinctively Christian environment.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather.
  • Work around dust, odor, and high noise levels.

MISCELLANEOUS:
The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.
