Job Purpose:
The Assistant Controller is responsible for all functions related to accounting as well as certain HR and risk management functions. The Assistant Controller is a critical team member who manages cash flows while driving efficiency and accuracy. The Assistant Controller will interact with internal team members as well as multiple external parties, including accountants, appraisers, attorneys, banks, brokers, clients, contractors, lenders, tenants, and other vendors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, maintain, and enhance all accounting policies and procedures of the company, including workflows and internal controls.
- Manage entity-level and project-level chart of accounts.
- Perform daily accounting and bookkeeping activities, including GL, AR and AP.
- Reconcile, verify and validate all entries and postings to GL accounts.
- Manage financial reporting, including preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
- Prepare and analyze financial statements, general ledgers, subsidiary ledgers, budgets, cash flow projections, and job cost reports.
- Audit and ensure accuracy of subsidiary reports.
- Prepare consolidations of multiple subsidiaries.
- Manage job cost accounting for construction projects from setup to close out.
- Process construction draws.
- CAM reconciliations.
- Bank reconciliations.
- Review budgets, monitor for variances and recommend areas of potential improvement.
- Monitor and process loan payments.
- Track debt maturities and lender-mandated covenants such as insurance requirements and debt service coverage ratios (DSCR).
- Process payroll and perform certain HR functions such as managing employee benefits programs.
- Manage all corporate and property-level insurance policies.
- Prepare contribution and distribution calculations, summaries and notices.
- Coordinate internal and external audits.
- Ensure proper allocation and elimination of intercompany transactions.
- Work with accountants on tax filings.
- Prepare and distribute 1099s.
- Stay current on accounting standards to identify issues as they arise; prepare written recommendation for appropriate accounting treatment to ensure compliance with laws and internal goals.
Qualifications:
- At least seven (7) years of accounting experience required, including at least four (4) years in commercial Real Estate, construction, property management, or related field.
- Well-developed organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize work effectively and adjust to multiple demands.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong computer literacy above basic MS Office applications (we embrace technology and strive for a paperless office) and proficient in accounting software.
- CPA license preferred.
- Yardi Voyager experience preferred.
