The Assistant Controller is responsible for ensuring that financial statements are in line with owner’s requirements and industry standards. Working under the direction of the controller, the Assistant Controller oversees the accountants and reviews the financial statements to assure that they meet standard accounting principles, state and federal regulations and government policies. They also assist with the development of financial accounting systems required to maintain reporting requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Maintaining the Company’s financial policies and procedures by providing operational oversight to the accountants, and assist with the budgeting function
- Supervises subordinate personnel in the accounting department
- Assists with all accounting functions including, but not limited to, General Ledger, Payroll, Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
- Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and analyze the financial results
- Supervises the preparation of monthly journal entries
- Performing non-full disclosure accounting procedures for clients, including compiling monthly financial statements, A/R, A/P, time billing, P/R, G/L, tax payments, and inventory control
- Help in development of reports for management or regulatory bodies
- Assists with the financial planning, forecasting and budgeting process
- Assist with the Properties’ year-end audits and liaison with the independent auditors
- Audits work flow to ensure that all accounting transactions are processed accurately and in compliance with industry standards
- Assist in the formulation of internal controls and policies to comply with legislation and established best practices
- Stays current with new regulations and industry pronunciations
- Work with other departments within the organization to achieve the overall goals of the company
- Assists Controller with a variety of tasks
- Remaining abreast of tax law, and corresponding with federal, state, and local tax agencies on behalf of clients
- Consulting with clients regarding tax planning
- Establishing and maintaining a positive working relationship with clients, agencies, and coworkers to promote a quality service image
- Contacting clients frequently to obtain required accounting data
- Researching and resolving accounting-related questions, concerns, and problems for clients in a friendly and timely manner
- Assisting clients with other special Accounting projects from time to time
- Participating in conducting training sessions
- Performing other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
Minimum of 5 years accounting experience with at least two years in a managerial role; public accounting and business experience preferred
- BA/BS in accounting
- CPA or an MBA is a plus
- Strong knowledge in Account Reconciliation, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll Processes, etc.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills
- Technical and comprehensive knowledge of all finance, financial planning, and accounting areas of a business including an excellent understanding of GAAP
- Real Estate experience a must
- Yardi Software experience preferred
- Excellent computer skills including all MS Office applications. (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) required
- Demonstrated professional demeanor, and the ability to maintain confidential information
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment and problem solving
