Job Description
Summary:
The Assistant Child Care Director will assist the Child Care Director of the child development center. The Assistant Director is expected to work with minimum supervision toward the overall objectives of administering the child development center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Performs other duties as assigned)
Program Management:
- Assists with the implementation of a daily schedule of planned activities that stimulates the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth of children. Ensures implementation of a developmentally appropriate program that promotes the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth of children.
- Assists with the development, implementation, analysis, and maintenance of surveys and needs assessments of staff and patrons to ensure that resources accommodate the needs of the military families and available program spaces are fully utilized.
- Helps coordinate staff training with the Training & Curriculum Specialist that includes reference to food and environmental allergies or physical disabilities, and policies and procedures on special needs accommodations. Maintains supporting documentation on special needs and ensures proper attention is provided for each child.
- Assists the Child Care Director in ensuring the maintenance of appropriate standards for facility condition, safety, and sanitation. Ensures completion of a daily inspection checklist. Submits work requests to maintenance as required. Recommends purchase of equipment and supplies to adequately maintain the facility and associated childcare programming.
- Gives input into the development of standard operating procedures as required for the efficient operation and management of facility and programs. Assists with the implementation of these SOPs.
- Identifies and responds to emergency situations including evacuations, child illness, and physical and emotional disorders. Acts as a mandatory reporter as prescribed by local policy in the case of suspected incidences of child abuse and neglect.
- In the absence of the Director, assumes responsibilities and performs duties and requirements of the position under the supervision of the Executive Director with oversight.
Budgeting and Fiscal Management:
- Assist in developing, maintaining, and managing a balanced budget relative to staffing, enrollment, and revenue.
- Assist in ensuring fiscal soundness and program accountability, including the supervision of all financial processes.
Personnel Management:
- Supervises employees and volunteers including: assigning and distributing work, coaching, counseling, and mentoring employees, recommending and completing personnel actions, training employees, keeping abreast of and actively supporting the principles of the ASYMCA policies, and prevention of sexual harassment.
- Initiates and implements personnel actions and supports the Child Care Director in order to assure quality related to selection, assignments, training, promotions, disciplinary actions, and recognition of employees and volunteers. Supports and carries out all established policies in matters of personnel management and communicates support of these policies.
- Develops staffing schedule in accordance with established ratios and group sizes and submits it to the Child Care Director for approval.
- Works collaboratively with the Training and Curriculum Specialist and Child Care Director to identify the training needs of employees, provide or make provisions for training to accomplish those needs, and assess the application of training. Ensures training in early childhood methods and child development to guarantee the effective implementation of established curriculum and developmental programming. Ensures training is competency-based and tied to career progression. Encourages and facilitates the pursuit of continuing higher education, including the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or college-level classes. Acts as an advisor to staff members in the CDA process/training.
- Assists in establishing a program environment that sustains participant interest and promotes positive interactions with other children, youth, and adults. Models appropriate behaviors and techniques for working with children and youth when working with Program Assistants and Administrative Team.
- Plans, implements, and supervises parent participation programs designed to encourage and support positive relationships between parent, child, and staff.
- Interacts professionally with employees, parents, volunteers, and local installation command personnel. Participates actively and positively in managing and resolving issues with parents, volunteers, and/or employees. Manages and resolves complaints related to personnel and makes recommendations to the Director for corrective action as necessary.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in child development, early childhood education, family and consumer science (early childhood emphasis), elementary education, special education, or other degrees appropriate to the position from an accredited college AND 1 year of full-time experience working with children and/or youth OR A combination of education (at least 24 semester hours) and experience, or additional course work, that that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above AND 3 years of full-time experience working with children and/or youth.
- Must complete all DoD training requirements within the specified time including orientation, initial, and annual ongoing training requirements, and required certifications, if any. Must maintain current food handlers, CPR and First Aid certifications, ASYMCA annual training, and the approved Marine Corps Standardized Module Training as prescribed, and tracks and records completed training on own Individual Development Plan (IDP).
- Satisfactorily complete all background checks in accordance with ASYMCA, DoD, and Marine Corps policy for employees who provide child care services. Must pass a pre-employment physical and annual physical thereafter, provide evidence of immunization and be free from communicable disease.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, and possess strong interpersonal communication skills. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
- Must be able to work independently and be accountable for his/her actions.
- Must be a team player in helping ASYMCA achieve its overall goals and objectives working with military families. High energy, proactive, and interested in a challenging opportunity.
- May work a fluctuating work schedule to complete work assignments outside of the typical work hours.
- Represents the Armed Services YMCA with a professional and positive demeanor.
- Adhere to ASYMCA’s organizational policies and procedures.
- Must have a current Driver’s License, insurance, and an operational vehicle.
- The position is subject to both pre-employment and random drug testing as a condition of employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
- Sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, and uses hands, arms, and legs for dexterity, balance, and climbing stairs frequently. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time.
- Occasionally lifts, carries, and balances objects weighing up to 45 pounds.
- Pulls and pushes objects such as file drawers and supplies.
- Prioritizes and multi-task work and projects requiring good memory, concentration, and analytical thinking.
- Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to safely supervise children’s activities.
- Be physically and mentally capable of providing care for children, pass health screenings annually to show good physical and mental health and freedom from communicable disease to include up-to-date immunizations, tests for Tuberculosis, and any other tests deemed necessary and appropriate per MCO 1710.30E.
