Job Description and Duties:We are seeking a highly experienced attorney in the area of employment law with a proven ability to lead a team.
This position may be filled at one of these State Fund locations: Pleasanton or Santa Ana.
State Fund Corporate Legal plays a crucial role in supporting State Fund's mission by representing State Fund in administrative and court disputes, offering legal advice, representation, and training to high-level executives, internal partners, and other state departments across various areas of business, insurance and government law.
Under the direction of the Deputy General Counsel, the Assistant Chief Counsel (ACC) supervises, directs, coordinates and reviews the work of a team of attorneys (Range A through Attorney V), Senior Legal Analysts, students, and Graduate Legal Assistants. The ACC manages personnel and performance, oversees the quality and quantity of work, and effectively resolves performance and work problems and may lead special projects. The ACC participates as a member of the State Fund's management team in the development and implementation of internal policies and procedures for the most efficient operation of the Corporate Legal.
Reports directly to the Deputy General Counsel and when necessary to the General Counsel.
In this position, the Assistant Chief Counsel oversees employment-related matters assigned to Corporate Legal and responsibilities include directly supervising other Employment attorneys and staff:
- Handle complex and sensitive employment-related cases before State and Federal courts and administrative bodies such as the State Personnel Board, California Civil Rights Department, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement; and
- Provide legal advice and counsel to State Fund Executives, Managers and their subordinates, and Human Resources department regarding employment and workplace issues such as hiring, progressive discipline, terminations, accommodations, discrimination, and harassment.
New to state candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of the alternate salary range when applicable. Placement to alternate salary range may be based on education or experience identified in your state application.
