The Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance provides overall leadership to the Strength and Conditioning staff within the Valparaiso Athletics Department and will lead the athletic department’s Sports Performance Team. Adherence to NCAA, Missouri Valley Conference, University policies, and legal requirements related to student-athlete well-being is a critical aspect of the position. In addition, the Assistant Athletic Director for Sport Performance will oversee the comprehensive plan for strength and conditioning and student-athlete well-being for Valparaiso student-athletes. Additionally, this position will serve as the primary Sports Performance coach for the men’s basketball team.
Major Responsibilities:Develop programs for the delivery of integrated and comprehensive strength and conditioning, sport science, and nutrition services for Valparaiso University student‐athletes who participate in 18 intercollegiate sports programs, including, but not limited to:
- Ensure processes are in place for appropriate Pre‐Participation evaluation and screening of student‐athletes
- Ensure sport‐specific strength and conditioning and performance optimization
- Provide nutrition education and enhancement and serve as a differentiator in recruiting
- Develop a plan to provide mental health services that span the spectrum of care ranging from debilitating emotional distress to performance optimization
- Create comprehensive rest, recovery, and regeneration strategies and initiatives
- Oversee and train staff that works to prevent, evaluate, manage, treat, and rehabilitate athletic injuries – including forming relationships with team physicians and specialists who will provide world-class treatment to our student-athletes
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Manage the budget for the Sport Performance Team unit
- Review Weekly/Monthly CARA logs for all Valparaiso athletics teams
- Work with colleagues in facilities and student-athlete experience to coordinate risk management and injury prevention efforts
- In partnership with the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Experience, administer substance abuse education and institutional drug testing program
- Develop, implement, and regularly review all policies and procedures pertaining to student-athlete health and performance, and monitor and ensure compliance with all policies and procedures of the NCAA, the Missouri Valley Conference, and Valparaiso University
- Master's degree in exercise science, kinesiology, health care administration, or related
- Five or more years of experience working with integrated Sports Performance and high-level athletes
- Detail oriented, organized, and an ability to work in a fast paced environment
- Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with a diverse group of internal and external constituents
