Universal Engineering Sciences (UES) has an opening in our Environmental Department. UES is a nationwide leader in Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials Testing and Inspection, Building Code Compliance, Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety, and Building Envelope.

Summary:
The Asbestos Inspector is a key role, responsible for conducting technical inspection, collection, and reporting of Asbestos Containing Materials in buildings, structures, and materials. The ideal candidate is a reliable, trustworthy individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment where collaboration and autonomy are valued.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:
Required to drive, stand, walk, use hands to type, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, talk, and hear; body motions and movements include bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, pulling, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and pushing, with or without reasonable accommodation
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation
The testing process for the various construction materials (i.e., soils, concrete, asphalt, etc.) is repetitive in nature several times per hour
The technician's primary duty is to test soil densities and concrete samples (air, temperature, mix design, etc.), as well as testing other construction materials; testing these samples requires extensive manual lifting and handling
Weights in the 0-75-pound range are lifted frequently (From 33% up to 66% of the task period) with a frequency range 10 - 35 repetitions per hour, with or without reasonable accommodation
Weights in the range of 35 - 75+ pounds (concrete cylinders and soils) are lifted frequently (From 15% to 30% of the task period) with a range of 5 - 15 repetitions per hour, with or without reasonable accommodation
Construction materials are manually lifted and carried distances on average ranging from a few feet to 75 feet, but may occasionally exceed 75 ft in walking distance and are unloaded manually at our lab and carried inside for testing, with or without reasonable accommodation
On average the workdays range from 7 - 12 hours
Job site conditions may or may not be accessible by vehicle, including wetlands, swamps, grasslands, and fields with uneven surfaces, sand, brush, and other natural and man-made obstacles
This job is primarily and regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and construction sites where the noise level is usually moderate to loud
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Ensure that all testing equipment used is functioning properly, maintained as required by company and/or manufacturer's policy, and that all calibrated equipment is within its calibration cycle
    • Ensure that project testing requirements are met and compliant with project specifications, requirements, and company policies or procedures
    • Conduct visual and physical inspections of buildings, structures, and materials to identify homogenous areas of suspect Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM).
    • Collect samples from suspected ACM areas for laboratory analysis.
    • Prepare sample location maps.
    • Prepare project chain of custody documentation and submit bulk samples to laboratory.
    • Determine whether materials contain asbestos based on sample results.
    • Prepare detailed reports documenting the inspection process, findings, and sample analysis results.
    • Perform AHERA Three-year inspection and update reports.
    • Must be willing to travel within the state of Florida, if applicable
    • Complete daily time and labor reports in accordance with company policy
    • Turn in required paperwork daily
    • Regular attendance is required
    • Must be flexible to changing schedules and hours to support business needs. Overnight and weekends schedules may be necessary to support business needs
    • Follow all company safety procedures and policies
    • Other duties may be assigned
Required Qualifications:
    • Valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record (in accordance with our Driver's License and Motor Vehicle Record Check Criteria)
    • Ability to pass a background check screening in accordance with Florida's Jessica Lunsford Act (or equivalent state classification)
    • EPA AHERA Building Inspector accreditation
    • High School Diploma
    • Ability to read & write, including interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, as well as the ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and customers/clients
    • Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
    • Reasoning ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form
Preferred Qualifications:
    • Associate Degree in Building or Construction Technology, Engineering, or Management
    • Bachelor's degree in Building or Construction Technology, Engineering, or Management
