Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Director of Residential Life, the Area Coordinator (AC) is a live-in professional who oversees the daily operations and leadership of their assigned area. The incumbent's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following areas: Lead to Residential Life Coordinators (SSP II), Resident Assistants (RAs), and Student Assistants (SAs); case coordination centering around student behavior, residential curriculum, and community development; and administrative components. The AC also takes on responsibility for one of the primary/core tasks of the department (e.g., recruitment, training, RHA, operations, DEI, etc.). The incumbent assists in the overall development and implementation of the Housing & Residential Life operations including the coordination of the residential life staff, programs, services, and facilities of the program.
Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally sensitive to enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student-centered and equity-minded approach in all communication and service efforts.
Key Responsibilities
  • Supervision of Assigned Staff and Communities - Lead Residential Life Coordinators (RLC)s, Resident Assistants (RAs) and Student Assistants (SAs); evaluate performance and provide on-going feedback, coaching, guidance in handling difficult situations and resident concerns.
  • Committee Work & Administration - Coordinate area administration, procedures, and operations, including opening and closing the buildings for the new academic year and break periods.
  • Residential Curriculum, Community Development, and Student Success - Collaborate with Residence Life Leadership team to develop and implement the Residential Curriculum.
  • Student Behavior, Crisis Management, and Case Coordination - Serve in on-call rotation. This position requires working variable hours, including late night and early morning hours as situations dictate, as well as when needed in an emergency response capacity. The Area Coordinator, in conjunction with other professional Residential Life staff members, alternate on-call coverage.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of practices, procedures, and activities related to student Residential Life operations. Demonstrated experience with planning, developing, and conducting training seminars, workshops, and retreats. Demonstrated experience with selection and training of student staff, particularly in a Housing and Residential Life environment. Demonstrated counseling skills in student development, conflict resolution, and group dynamics. Ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of overall operations, functions, and programs of California State University Long Beach. Exhibit a high degree of creativity and originality, as well as initiative and ability to work independently in complex situations and innovation in the development of training and orientation programs.
General knowledge of interviewing and counseling techniques, and ability to listen and reason logically. Ability to quickly assess needs and effectively and intervene in student behavioral and crisis scenarios involving physical and/or emotional risk. Ability to complete tasks and assignments quickly and accurately in order to meet established deadlines. General knowledge of personal and social problems typically encountered by college students. Ability to develop accurate budget projections and monitor expenses.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies including ability to always maintain professionalism. Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, peers, administrators, campus and University personnel, clients, state officials, vendors, professionals, management, etc. and maintain a positive and respectful attitude.
Demonstrated experience with applying sound professional judgment. Ability to work as part of a team through close collaboration with colleagues and coordinate with others including the ability to maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills. Understanding of confidentiality standards related to FERPA and Title IX. Must live on campus in university-provided accommodations while employed in this position so that emergency response requirements can be effectively and promptly fulfilled.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
• Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related field and three years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.
• At least three years’ experience in higher education student housing or related field, highly preferred.
• Master’s degree in student development, Higher Education, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field, highly preferred.
• Minimum one year experience supervising Resident Assistants (RAs) or other University student workers.
• Minimum of three years of experience in counseling, advising, and programming for college-level students.
Physical Summary
  • Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.

Compensation
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $5,276 - $6,397 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.
CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,025 - $7,159 per month.

Time Base
1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.
Duration of Appointment
This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
