Position Purpose

As an Archaeologist III/Principal Investigator you will conduct and/or supervise cultural resource projects including archaeological and historic inventories, survey, testing, and excavation for KLJ client projects. The position oversees field and office staff and provides scientific oversight to projects. The primary work area for projects is North Dakota and Montana.

Essential Functions

  • Supervise cultural resource fieldwork and serve as lead author on reports
  • Provide direction, review, and support to the group by leading large, multidisciplinary projects
  • Provide technical assistance to the marketing team with business development, proposals, contracts and development of scopes of work, schedules and budgets
  • Serve as project or client manager on designated projects
  • Participate in and facilitate meetings with stakeholders and clients
  • Instruct, train, and mentor group members and support staff
  • Ensure compliance with KLJ safety and quality standards

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for either assisting project managers or serving as a project manager with responsibility for developing project budgets and ensuring scoped tasks are completed within designated constraints
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of regional prehistoric and historic resources, contexts, and criteria for significance
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of the National Environmental Policy Act, Archaeological Resource Protection Act and other similar regulations.
  • Implement and apply National Historic Preservation Act and National Register of Historic Places criteria to cultural resource management.
  • Assist with project scope, estimates, and contracts
  • May assist with response to RFPs (request for proposals) and lead interviews
  • May prepare forecast of workload for assigned staff and closely monitor backlog

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a related field
  • Must meet Secretary of Interior qualifications for Principal Investigator
  • Ability to be listed on regional BLM, Forest Service, State, and other required permits
  • Detailed working knowledge of state law, the National Historic Preservation Act and National Environmental Policy Act
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate motorized vehicles

Preferred

  • A current RPA certification is preferred.
  • Prior regional experience serving as either Field Director, Project Manager, or Principal Investigator
  • GIS background

Relationships

The Archaeologist III is supervised by the Department Manager and receives general guidance and direction on project related tasks from the Department Manager or the Project Manager.

  • Leads project staff

Hours and Travel

This position requires the individual work 40 or more hours per week with 40% of the time spent in the field and 60% in the office.

  • Be able to walk on uneven terrain up to ten miles per day
  • Frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 75 pounds

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $95,000 per year.
