The Wistar Institute has an opening for an Associate Managing Director who will work with the Wistar Animal Facility (WAF) Managing Director to lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the Animal Facility which provides Wistar investigators with animal housing, animal care and welfare, training, health surveillance monitoring, colony management and services.  The Associate Managing Director is expected to identify and implement best practices in terms of Institute policies, federal regulations, and human resources while optimizing animal care, productivity, and cost reduction.  The Associate Managing Director must have demonstrated the ability to motivate staff through effective use of resources and by creating a team atmosphere. 

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure adequate facility staffing within budgetary and operational parameters established with Scientific Director and Cancer Center management.
  • Ensure daily activities required for Animal Facility operations are properly and efficiently conducted.
  • Ensure capital and operating budgets are in alignment with facility needs.
  • Ensure short and long-term objectives are achieved in alignment with strategic plans.
  • Assist with coordinating work and communications with Attending Veterinarian and Veterinarian Technician.
  • Ensure all research and operational staff complete required orientation training.
  • Enforce safety and other regulatory mandates related to animal research under institutional policy. 
  • Participate in the development and updating of the WAF and (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocol electronic management system.
  • Participate as an alternate voting member of the IACUC.
  • Work closely with the Managing Director and WAF leadership to manage the operating and capital budgets as well as ensure timely submission of charge sheets for all work completed by the WAF to facilitate the normal billing cycle. 
  • Creates a positive work environment and works with the Managing Director to resolve concerns and conflicts.

 

Additional Duties:

  • Responsible for supervision and schedules of WAF personnel.
  • Assist with purchase invoice management, i.e. monitoring blanket purchase order balances.
  • Develop and maintain a robust training program in collaboration with the veterinary staff.
  • Responsible for working with an electronic system for animal ordering, animal purchases, clinical veterinarian cases, special services, cage census, protocol reviews, and making cage cards.
  • Ensure that requests of Attending Veterinarian and delegates concerning husbandry and medical treatment of animals are implemented.
  • Endeavor to maintain the physical environment and the husbandry provided for animal care consistent with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Public Health Service (PHS) standards.
  • Additional duties that align with the key duties and responsibilities described above.

 

Job requires day-to-day contact with laboratory research animals.

Education Requirements:  Bachelor's degree in Animal Science or related field or equivalent education and experience required. 

 

Experience Preferred: 5-7 years of progressive supervisory/managerial responsibilities in a research Animal Facility required.  Achievement of advanced professional certification appropriate to responsibilities, such as American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification and Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) certification. 

 

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or other Qualifications: Must be familiar with AALAS standards for professional certification, the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) and USDA regulations and laws pertaining to the housing and maintaining of research animals, and with AAALAC International program standards.
