Animal Care Technician I
Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue is a 501c3 non-profit equine welfare organization. Founded in
2005, we continue to lead the fight to end horse slaughter, abuse, and neglect.
With highly trained Animal Care Technicians, we are equipped to tackle the many needs of our equine friends. From canker and CPL treatments to the unique housing we provide for our blind horses, we do everything we can to provide the absolute best care possible to these gentle souls.
What You’ll Do:
At Gentle Giants, we view and treat every horse in our care as our patients. In this position, you will be a pivotal part of our team as we work to provide top notch care to our rescues.
Working alongside staff and trained volunteers, you will help to complete the daily feed for 120-150 draft horses, including ensuring they receive appropriate medications, identify common ailments or injuries, and ensure the safety of all members of the crew, horse and human alike. Opportunities to participate in rescue trips are offered when possible.
Daily Tasks:
- With your team, complete the daily feed for 120-150 horses across the farm
- Assist in administering daily medications and special treatments, including medicated baths, leg washes, hoof wraps, and more
- Ensure all animals in our care have access to fresh, cold, water and hay at all times
- Muck and reset stalls
- Monitor and maintain cleanliness of barns, fields, run-in sheds and disposing of any soiled hay, trash and debris
- Other duties as assigned
Required Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
- Passionate about animal welfare and desire to work in the industry
- Ability to work collaboratively with fellow staff and volunteers
- Proficient in basic wound care
- Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks
- Ability to lift over 50lbs.
- Ability to work in extreme weather conditions
Bonus if you have experience in the following areas! If not, no worries! We will train you!
- Understanding of equine body language and use of pressure and release method
- Proficient in catching, haltering, and leading horses of varying temperaments
- Ability to identify common injuries or illnesses (colic, choke, lameness, heat stress, etc.), take vitals (Temperature, Pulse, Respiratory rate) and provide a clear report to lead staff for necessary action
- Proficient and confident in handling hooves, picking and wrapping them safely
Details:
- Job Type: Full-time, Non-Exempt/Hourly. This position is eligible for overtime as approved by your supervisor.
- Pay: Starting $19.44 per hour with annual increases and COLA.
- Schedule: 40 hours per week. Weekends may be required. As established with Supervisor.
