Description of Work Unit

Colorado State University recently launched AgNext a first-of-its-kind collaborative to support profitable, sustainable, and healthy livestock production. AgNext is a leader for research in animal and ecosystem health while enhancing profitability of the supply chain and serves as the crossroads for producers, industry partners, and researchers to come together to innovate real time solutions for sustainability animal agriculture. Our research focuses on advancing the science of animal agriculture to ensure a continued safe, secure, and nutritious food supply. Our mission is to identify and scale innovation that fosters the health of animals and ecosystems to promote profitable industries that support vibrant communities.
Position Summary
The position will support feedlot management, research, and Outreach at AgNext, in collaboration with research partners. Work will involve leading day-to-day operations of AgNext Feedlot Research projects and will include hosting outreach events and tours of research facilities to project partners, producers, and interest stakeholders, to ranchers and other land managers and conducting research in both confined and rangeland settings. A Bachelor's degree in a related field with three years of relevant experience or a Master's degree in a related field is required. Strong communication skills and an interest in extension/outreach, as well as good organizational skills and experience with research, are required.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Research Associate II
    • BS in Animal Science, Animal Nutrition, or related field + 3 years of professional experience
  • Research Associate III
    • BS in Animal Science, Animal Nutrition, or related field + 5 years of professional
  • Experience with feedlot management
  • Experience with low stress cattle handling
  • Experience independently collecting data and following standard operating protocols
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
  • Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license or access to a licensed driver by employment start date

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • MS or PhD in Animal Science, Animal Nutrition, or related field
  • Experience conducting outreach related to animal agriculture
  • Ability and desire to communicate in cross-functional teams with members from diverse backgrounds
  • Interest in advancing a career in the science of sustainable animal agriculture

  • Research activities will involve research in confined feedlot settings, with a focus on implementation of new technologies, improved production efficiency, thermal stress, animal behavior and physiology, genetics, enteric fermentation, and other environmental impacts.
  • Managing day-to-day operations of research trials and data collection according to established protocols and in consultation with supervising scientists will be the primary activity.
  • There will also be the opportunity for participating in data analysis, write up, and publication.
