Job description

Job Description SummaryThis role is within the Commercial Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) Mechanical Design team in GE Aerospace's Engineering Division. The team is responsible for the design and development of CMC components within the High-Pressure-Turbine (HPT) and Combustor Module of the GE9X and LEAP Commercial Turbofan engines.
As the Advanced Lead Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting and leading projects for CMC hot section hardware and/or interfacing metallic components. Your primary tasks will include performing stress analysis and lifing on these components using finite-element-analysis (FEA) software. You will be responsible for evaluating component durability, analyzing impacts of non-conforming hardware, providing assessments on fleet findings, and supporting new component design releases. You will need to implement lessons learned from other programs and new fleet findings into the next iteration of the component design.
Your previous experiences will be fundamental in iterating on existing processes, standard practices, documentation, and designs. In this position, you will have a moderate level of autonomy, working directly with your team lead and component hardware lead. You will be required to take ownership of the quality of your work and contribute input into setting your priorities. While executing tasks, you will need to assess your capabilities and seek guidance from your supervisor and technical mentors when necessary. This role requires consistent collaboration and communication with the hardware owners, thermal systems design team, and material behaviors team.
This role presents an exciting opportunity to make significant impact on the design and innovation of GE Aerospace's products.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Execute the analysis and evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to standard practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.

  • May include support roles with specialized expertise or technical knowledge in adjacent areas like component testing, material behavior, and thermal systems.

  • Applies general knowledge of mechanical engineering past experiences and education. Understands how work contributes to the hardware owner objectives and engine program. Develop specialized knowledge of turbofan hot section design and composite analysis.

  • Resolves issues using established procedures. Deliberately consults mentor or more senior team members to understand issues outside of defined workscope or expertise.

  • Lead small projects and act as a resource for colleagues with less experience. Provides alternate perspectives on existing solutions, while listening and collaborating with team.

  • Completion of detailed documentation of assessment assumptions, boundary conditions, and results. Shares conclusions with adjacent teams and builds consensus by explaining difficult or sensitive information.

  • Creation of macros, tools, and best practices to standardize Stress and Lifing Analysis procedures for CMC, combustor, and turbine components.

Required Characteristics

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related STEM field from an accredited university and 4+ years prior relevant engineering experience, OR an Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related STEM field from an accredited university and 2+ years prior relevant engineering experience.
