Job Summary:

The Academic Advisor STEM Student Support Services is responsible working with Student Support Services (SSS) STEM students and SSS STEM colleagues to meet grant objectives. Specifically, the advisor will provide advice and assistance for STEM course selection, assist with financial and economic literacy, and provide individualized counseling for personal, career and academic needs. The Advisor will also conduct assessments that track student progress and implement interventions that offer support, motivation and guidance that assist participants in meeting their academic and career goals.

Duties & Essential Job Functions:

1. Conducts one-on-one advising sessions with approximately 120 SSS STEM students providing STEM related academic, career, social/personal, and financial advising.
2. Assesses student needs, plan interventions, set goals, provide academic and personal coaching, conduct thorough follow-up procedures.
3. Consults and collaborates with University faculty and staff on behalf of SSS STEM Participants.
4. Facilitates periodic workshops to SSS STEM participants on STEM and other related topics.
5. Participates in college advising trainings related to STEM.
6. Utilizes learning styles, learning assistance strategies and a coaching approach to ensure student success.
7. Works with Disability Office to explore accommodation services and resources to SSS Participants with disabilities
8. Meets regularly with tutor coordinator to ensure services rendered to low-performing students are being maximized by SSS STEM.
9. Provides academic advising and college, career, financial aid, and economic literacy activities and related services to SSS STEM Participants.
10. Advises and assists SSS STEM Participants with postsecondary course selection and graduate school admissions and financial aid process.
11. Maintains a caseload of Participants and provide them with documented services and activities.
12. Addresses any situations of conflict or crisis by recommending on-site resources or making appropriate referrals.
13. Supports SSS staff in executing new student orientation and attending recruitment activities that expand the reach of SSS services to our target population on campus.
14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Counseling, Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Health Science, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • 2 years of experience in area of STEM and/or Health Science and appropriate and relevant professional experience working in a TRIO federal program or similar related program for disadvantaged and at-risk college students.

Preferred Education & Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling, Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Health Science, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Professional or personal experiences in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting Participants.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of barriers to postsecondary education faced by low income and first-generation college students.
  • Knowledge to teach study skills and time management techniques.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and degree requirements.
  • Knowledge of university programs.
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques.
  • Knowledge to establish and maintain databases.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Skill in the use of PeopleSoft or equivalent data records systems.
  • Skill in effective written and verbal communications.
  • Ability to interact with students.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

  • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
  • Lifting and moving objects and equipment up to 10 lbs.

Work Environment:

  • Work is indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
  • This role is an on-campus and in-person position.
  • There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
