Hours: Monday – Friday 6pm-2:30am.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Embedding Lab Assistant is responsible for a variety of duties throughout the lab. Embedding and assisting in cytology, loading, and unloading surgical specimens on processors. Processor and stainer chemical changes. Also cleans and maintains assigned areas and performs other duties as needed. The Lab Assistant may be involved in minimal handling of Hazardous waste.
Employees are responsible for following all Company policies and procedures. These policies and procedures will include adherence to regulatory standards such as CAP, CLIA and OSHA, including safety standards in performing all aspects of the functions below.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
I:
- Embedding tissue samples
- Loading/Unloading processor tissue samples.
- File blocks and slides as needed
- Perform cytology functions as needed
- Assist Histology department as assigned
- Perform daily QC documentation
- Maintain equipment and supplies in clean condition, including transferring from stainers and tissue processor to 90-day accumulation containers (55-gallon drums)
- May perform other duties as assigned.

Lead:

- In the absence of the Histology Lab Manager responsible for department oversight and supervision
- Assist in new employee orientation and training
- Assist with updating and maintaining Accessioning Procedures
- Troubleshooting/problem solving
- Maintain communication with the Histology Lab Manager
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT:
- In exercising these functions, the employee must be able to lift up to 40 lbs occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs routinely to move objects.
- Employee may be exposed to blood products, knife cuts, hazardous waste and chemical fumes, so appropriate precautionary measures must be followed at all times. Certain situations require eye protection, mask, lab coat and or gloves. Hazardous Waste training required.

- Embedding center
- Stainers, H and E, IHC and Thin-Prep
- Coverslipper
- Typical lab equipment
- Computer

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED
Level I: less than 3 years of relevant work experience
II: 4-7 years of relevant work experience
III: 8+ years of relevant work experience
(Experience to be determined at the discretion of the Histology Manager or Accessioning
Supervisor)
