(Minimum 16 hours and up to 40 hrs/week), Flexible start date with 3-6 month duration.

Salary:
Sophomore and below: $17.00/hr.
Junior: $18.00/hr.
Senior: $19.00/hr.
Graduate Students: up to $22.00/hr.
  • 1-year Graduate program $20.00/hr.
  • 2-year Graduate program $21.00/hr.
  • Higher $22.00/hr.
*DNR provides housing in some locations or a $1000/month housing stipend if free housing is unavailable.

This unique educational opportunity is located in the Product Sales Program of DNR's South Puget Sound Region. Foresters at DNR carry out land management activities such as timber sale design; reforestation; and road layout, construction and maintenance. This internship will provide hands-on experience in these activities and provide an opportunity to work with professional Foresters, Engineers, and Biologists as well as exposure to other disciplines that ensure appropriate management activities are conducted responsibly. South Puget Sound Region is composed of 360,000 acres of DNR-managed Trust Lands that produce revenue for the trust beneficiaries. The internship will provide valuable experiences in Forest Management principles and an understanding of WA Dept. of Natural Resources' core mission, history and objectives
Duties
Responsibilities:
Assist foresters and engineers with the following:
  • Identification of streams, wetlands and sensitive sites, and protection measures during management activities
  • Harvest unit design
  • Leave tree selection and marking
  • GIS and GPS technology use and mapping
  • Design of harvest units and opportunity to observe active harvest and road construction equipment
  • Reforestation activities including vegetation management and decision criteria to plantation tending
  • Biological, geological, and silvicultural assessment

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • A full-time student (12+ credits/quarter) majoring in Forest Management, Forest Operations, Forest Science, Silviculture, Forest Engineering or related field that will be returning to school in a following quarter/semester OR Graduate student.

  • Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
    • Assigned duty station may be a district work center, region headquarter office, or the Natural Resources Building. There is also a large component of work done in an agricultural (open field) setting that may include working around agriculture equipment and large farm animals.
    • Daily traveling to project locations should be expected as fieldwork is a regular expectation of this position. Overnight travel is limited but may be required if a project is in a remote location or if a learning opportunity includes visiting another region.
    • Physically able to work alone or as part of a team in undeveloped, remote, forested or back-county landscapes and terrain in all weather conditions.
    • A valid unrestricted driver's license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
    Desired Qualifications:
    • Beginning knowledge of theory, policy, principles, and practices of the forestry profession
    • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office, Adobe, and ArcGIS skills
    • Basic written and oral communication skills
    • Candidates should have work or recreational experience driving on forest (dirt or gravel) roads.

    Insurance Benefits

    Retirement and Deferred Compensation
