Are you someone who believes in sustainable forest management and the value of Forest Certification in demonstrating responsibly managed forests? If you enjoy working with and coordinating natural resources professionals including field and policy staff as well as external stakeholders, then this is the job for you. You'll utilize organizational and facilitation skills, and knowledge of forest and natural resources management and Forest Certification schemes in demonstrating sustainable forest management.
The DNR State Uplands program and Forest Resources Division is seeking an ambitious person to be the Forest Certification Program Manager. This position will have the opportunity to communicate with many professionals and Uplands Program Managers to facilitate presenting. The successful applicant will help maintain SFI certification on approximately 2.4 million acres of trust lands and FSC certification on approximately 177,000 acres.
Duties
Responsibilities:
  • Plans, coordinates, and facilitates two Forest Certification (FSC and SFI) annual audits.
  • Is the designated Forest Certification technical expert for state uplands.
  • Demonstrates compliance with specific Forest Certification schemes.
  • Assists regions and field staff in demonstrating certification compliance.
  • Represents DNR on state and national Forest Certification committees.
  • Administer contracts with third-party Forest Certification auditing firms.
  • Coordinate and administer the implementation of agreements and contracts with research partners within the Olympic Experimental State Forest (OESF).
  • Develop and oversee budgets for the research and monitoring programs in the OESF.
  • Sustain partnerships with stakeholders, research partners, and other collaborators through active facilitation.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or graduate degree in business administration, management, communications, writing, or a related natural resources field,
    OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Two years of professional experience in natural resource management and project management.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.
  • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations, and public records retention and requests are followed.
  • Key Knowledge of:
    • Principles and methods of public administration, third-party auditing, and agency management
    • WA state laws and rules that direct forestland management.
  • Strong Understanding of:
    • WA State Environmental Policy Act
    • Ecologically based natural resource management and ecosystem services
    • Public relations and communication.
  • Proven Ability to:
    • Verbally communicate complex, often politically sensitive messages to broad audiences
    • Make effective oral presentations to both scientific and non-scientific audiences
    • Organize multi-day events involving up to 50 participants with keen attention to detail
    • Provide leadership to a diverse group of professional natural resource staff
    • Work collaboratively with stakeholders, contractors, executive management, division staff from a variety of programs, and field staff around the State, And
    • Solve complex problems.

    Insurance Benefits

    Retirement and Deferred Compensation
    State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs. For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems' web site.
    Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
    Social Security
    All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.
    Public Service Loan Forgiveness
    If you are employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, and meet the qualifying criteria, you may be eligible to receive student loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
    Holidays
    Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to paid holidays and one paid personal holiday per calendar year.
