JOB DESCRIPTION
STAFF NAME: JOB TITLE: YOUTH SPECIALIST – POS1744
COMPENSATION: $15/hr for 30 hours a week/ 60 hours a two week pay period
JOB SUMMARY: Youth Specialist is responsible for the development, coordination, facilitation and maintenance of high-quality youth services

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Candidate must be 21 years of age or older and hold a high school diploma or equivalent at employment. Greater consideration will be given to those candidates with experience working directly with children, youth or adolescents. It is highly recommended that candidates meet Pinellas County License Board child care training requirements for Director, SMIC or Child Care Worker and actively engaged in professional development plan when employed by the TSHA during the 90-day probationary period to satisfy educational requirements. A person with or seeking a college degree in a child-related field such as child development psychology or education is preferred. Current CPR/AED, First Aid and Lifeguard certification is preferred.

This position requires a strong level of attention to the supervision and delivery of youth program services for youth 5-17 years of age such as homework help and enrichments. Supervision of youth is our primary responsibility with the support of multiple staff team members to ensure the safety of youth at all times on-site and during field trips throughout the County and beyond.
It is critically important to have a strong capacity to cultivate healthy relationships with youth individually. The Cops ‘n Kids Youth Center provides many program services that inspire positive youth development academically and socially such as: organic gardening, career explorations, enrichments such as performing arts, STEM and character development. The role of Youth Specialistmust show the capacity to maintain strong interpersonal relationships with youth one on one. All staff are expected to role model for each other and for youth and families; professionalism and a strong passion for empowering youth today for a great tomorrow. Bringing a fun, dynamic, high-energy approach to working with youth and supporting staff team mates enables programming such as educational curriculum, tutoring, coaching and personal counseling to be truly impactful for youth. The main objective in all Cops ‘n Kids Youth Center programming is to instill and grow youth’s ability to not only experience their greatness potential but also to understand how important and valued they are.
Employees must be able to supervise and instruct groups of children and older youth. Knowledge and experience facilitating sports, performing arts, STEM, academic literacy, gardening, and or other youth development programming is preferred. This position requires professionalism, proactive teamwork skills with colleagues and the ability to relate well to children and older youth.
PHYSICAL AND/OR MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to stand, remain outdoors and maintain continual physical endurance teaching and supervising youth for extended periods of time. Must be able to facilitate dynamic youth activities. The candidate must also be mentally alert and be able to give youth directions and communicate effectively age appropriately and also with management and administrative staff.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities:
1. Role model professional positive behavior and teamwork skills with youth, parents/caregivers, community and staff team members.
2. Responsible for the supervision of each elementary age youth in designated group and keeping current and accurate attendance records at all times.
3. Responsible to collecting and tracking youth attendance at all times and working with her supervisor to submit according to operational protocols
4. Maintain priority of establishing and maintaining mentorship relationships with youth.
5. As needed, support community garden development efforts through youth programming on a weekly basis to help sustain life of the garden.
6. As needed, support the Program Director’s focus of developing curriculum (lesson series) specifically in areas that enhance / strengthen positive youth development: leadership, sports, health and wellness, and community service engagement and any other extracurricular activity that is of personal interest such as career exploration in law enforcement, college or vocational school exploration, photography, dance, music, reading club, etc.
7. Dynamic Teaching / Mentoring: It’s very important to interact with you and facilitate group activities with a high energy and dynamic teaching style, captivating youth’s attention and stimulating buy-in and participation. Active participation working with youth directly is a hallmark requirement for all Youth Center personnel
8. As needed, support the Program Director in facilitating community service outreach projects.
9. Must manage and address youth behavioral concerns and work with the Program Director in following discipline procedures as described in the Proactive Behavior Management Plan.
10. Manage and distribute daily snack adhering to licensing and food service protocol.
11. Establish positive rapport with parents and staff team members, Housing Authority personnel and volunteers.
12. Support staff team in routine cleanliness and maintenance of equipment, supplies, kitchen, main office and youth activity rooms in compliance with all health department and licensing regulations.
13. As directed by Cops ‘n Kids Program funders JWB and DJJ contracts, complete required professional development and other training courses, such as MODS and other additional annual training opportunities.
14. Actively support and monitor high-quality child care safety and youth development standards as directed by Supervisor.
15. Understanding and maintaining a higher sensitivity to youth trauma exposure- SAMHSA’s six Trauma Informed Care (TIC) principles.
16. If applicable, see specific customized performance goals described below with achievement goal date based on date of hire and professional interests:
· In order for Cops ‘n Kids to maintain good standing compliance with the Pinellas County License Board (PCLB) and the Juvenile Welfare Board (JWB) professional development requirements for licensed child care centers, staff are responsible for completing training hours and other courses as described by licensing guidelines. Seek guidance from the Program Director to register, study and complete required MOD courses in addition to seeking SMIC credential
· Participate in professional development or contract required trainings as prescribed by JWB and DJJ
